The Aberdeen-Springfield Canal Company (ASCC) is seeking capable, self-motivated individuals to fill Maintenance positions.

Under direct supervision of the ASCC Maintenance Foreman, Maintenance performs general labor work in the maintenance, construction, and repair of Company property, vehicles, and equipment along with substituting as a Ditch Rider, as/if needed. This position inspects and repairs canals, laterals and ditches for leaks and spills. This is a full-time, year-round position.

Note: When performing in the Maintenance position, Maintenance must review all planned equipment/fleet repairs with the Mechanic before proceeding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operates heavy equipment machinery and performs routine maintenance work, repair, and labor on canal system equipment and facilities.

Repairs headgates, measurement devices, flushing and clearing pumps, pipes, and culverts as needed or as directed by the Mechanic and/or Maintenance Foreman.

Enters the canal or structure to repair problems, resolves issues, or assists in repairs while water is present wearing waders or boots and personal protective safety equipment and gear.

Proficiently and safely performs basic welding and turnout repair practices.

Inspects, maintains, and repairs the canal, laterals, ditches, ditch roads, property, and accesses, to maintain the structural and functional integrity.

Maintains and repairs ditch roads, property, structures, and accesses.

Identifies materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings or structures such as canals, laterals, and roads.

Cleans out ditches and canals, raises ditch banks, repairs concrete and wooden structures, and erects fences and gates.

Removes debris and make emergency repairs to banks, structures, gates, and canal roads.

Drives and maneuvers equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, and rocks, and to distribute and level earth or terrain, without damaging existing signage and structures along canal roads and lateral right-of-way.

Maintains the integrity of the canal, siphon, pipe, or lateral when either leaking or plugged using shovel, trash hook, or other necessary equipment and/or resources.

Loads and moves dirt, rocks, equipment, and materials, using trucks/dump trucks, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.

Performs excavation and back-filling operation, cleaning, and disposing of waste material; proper soil processing and backfill compaction requirements for canal repair projects.

Welds or assists in fabrication of equipment, headgates, etc. as necessary.

Fills holes and exterminates rodents throughout the entire water system.

Sprays weeds and de-mosses canal using chemicals and appropriate applicator (must have or be able to obtain chemical applicator license).

Reports any known maintenance problems on the canals, laterals, diversions or drains to the Maintenance Foreman in an efficient and timely manner.

Acts as substitute Ditch Rider, as needed.

Performs general maintenance duties on vehicles and equipment according to regular schedule, alone or with assistance of other available employees.

Keeps accurate machine and vehicle maintenance records and safety records as requested.

Operates and maintains construction equipment, to include, but limited to the following: Trucks; small dozers; backhoe; loaders; winch trucks; hauling equipment; and other similar size construction equipment.

Complies with safety standards when operating heavy equipment.

Perfor s complete equipment inspections and ensures optimal operating condition.

Organizes and maintains maintenance and repair records on a daily basis and provides progress reports to the Maintenance Foreman.

Loads and unloads heavy equipment and transports.

Aligns machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference
