About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic works in the City’s Fleet Services Division in the Department of Public Works. The main duties of this position are to perform routine maintenance of heavy equipment, and to assist other members of the Fleet Services team with complex repairs.
What you’ll be doing:
Performs routine and assists with complex repairs on trucks and heavy equipment.
Inspects, tests and repairs ignition systems, computerized engine controls, fuel injection systems, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake and suspension systems, drivetrain systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, emission systems, air bag restraint systems, heating and cooling systems, engines, transmissions, walking beams, bushings, leaf springs, u and center bolts, s cams and valves, compressors, shoes, drums, chambers, lines, hoses, pumps, cylinders, spreader plumbing, chains, rollers, sprockets, rotator motors, radiators, evaporators, condensers, or other vehicle systems and equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles.
Performs welding and fabrication work associated with repair, maintenance, and installation of equipment.
Determines materials required for projects.
Prepares and maintains vehicle maintenance logs and records.
Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments, such as hand and power tools, a/c refrigerant machine, press, drill, welder, sand blaster, vehicle lift, forklift, tire machine and balancer, bandsaw, parts washer, basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered :
Associate degree in Diesel Mechanics or a related field required.
Supplemented by one year of experience in diesel mechanics or a closely related field.
Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required:
Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s).
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT), or other certifications required upon hire or within 12 months of starting. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education will be considered.

Other things to know:
Hiring Range: $24.46 to $29.35 per hour.
The successful candidate will be eligible for a $1,000 hiring bonus. They will receive $300 award upon hire, a $300 award after the first 6 months, and a final $400 award after successful completion of the 12-month probationary period in the same position in good standing with the City. Please note that unfortunately this bonus does not apply to existing City of Asheville employees.
Work Schedule: FT 40 hours Monday - Thursday 7:00am - 6:00pm. However, this position may also work Fridays, weekends, holidays, or during weather events, or emergency situations as needed. This is a non-exempt position, eligible for overtime in accordance with City policy.
