Position Summary

The mission of the Morehouse School of Medicine Center for Maternal Health Equity ( CMHE ) is to pursue equity in maternal health by reducing maternal morbidity and mortality locally, nationally, and globally by building and strengthening community-academic partnerships, developing a competitive translational research program, and offering interdisciplinary and professional training. Our vision is to have ‘healthier mothers, healthier children and healthier families’ by advancing science as it relates to women’s health and building bridges for community engagement and advocacy.

The Center for Maternal Health Equity ( CMHE ) is seeking two Postdoctoral Maternal and Child Health Justice Research Fellows to contribute to the center’s research, training, and community engagement activities. The fellows will contribute to a portfolio of federally- and privately funded maternal health research under the mentorship of the Center’s Executive and Assistant Directors. The fellowship focuses on research pertaining to maternal and child health ( MCH ), women’s health, sexual/reproductive health, health equity, reproductive justice, research justice, community-engaged research, epidemiology, social and structural determinants of health, implementation science, and health policy. We desire fellows who have a passion for addressing maternal health inequities, and who will pursue MCH faculty and leadership positions at the national and state levels.

The fellowship appointment will be for 1-2 years, with funding for the second-year contingent upon a successful first year.We encourage applications from individuals from racially/ethnically diverse backgrounds, or other underrepresented backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in maternal and child health, social/behavioral sciences, epidemiology, public health, implementation science, public health, or a closely related field prior to hiring date

    Preferred Qualifications

  • A defined research focus including (but not limited to) maternal/infant health, child/adolescent health, women’s health, and/or sexual/reproductive health.

  • Unique skillsets in MCH practice/policy development, social marketing, health education, epidemiology, quality improvement, dissemination and implementation science, health literacy, translational research, and/or new technology.

  • Established record of scholarly research (e.g., publication record, extramural funding).

  • Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring graduate students.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

The fellows will be mentored by clinical and research faculty and will be encouraged to develop actionable goals for professional growth. In addition, the postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with women’s health faculty and postdoctoral fellows in other programs, as well as with other maternal health partner organizations locally, regionally, and nationwide. The research fellows will also participate in and lead classes and seminars (e.g., journal club, guest lectures). Support for professional conferences and other dissemination activities will be provided. The fellows will conduct and collaborate on CMHE research projects, manuscripts, final reports, policy briefs, white papers and is expected to further their independent research by developing funding proposals with MSM / CMHE faculty and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

The primary responsibility of the fellows will be to collaborate with Principal Investigators and members of CMHE research teams to carry out an array of activities in support of the Center’s mission. The Fellows will join research teams working on studies funded by the NIH , HRSA , and other entities. Fellowship activities include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in data collection, management, and analysis.

  • Participate in dissemination activities, including manuscript development and conference presentations.

  • Lead and participate in community engagement activities.

  • Assist in grant development for ongoing and new research activities.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
