WestRock Company Technical Sourcing Engineer in Atlanta, Georgia

The opportunity:

The Technical Sourcing Specialist provides support collaboration with R&D, Engineering and Procurement to enable strategic projects in support of WestRock’s productivity, sustainability, and innovation goals. The scope of this position will be to support both mills and converting teams in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. This role will be lead Procurement activities associated with the R&D stage gate process as well as collaborating with the Category Management teams to support or own complex projects to drive long-term risk reduction or value creation. Metrics of success will be focused on early procurement and comprehensive involvement in R&D projects, as well of supporting Category Managers for make/buy, should cost, life cycle cost and or value creations analysis.

Effective communication and expertise in project management is critical for the Procurement Technical Sourcing Engineer. A candidate must be able to balance both the tactical and strategic nature of this position. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in a team environment and indirectly influencing stakeholders, suppliers and leadership.

The Procurement Technical Sourcing Engineer will be based in Richmond, VA or Atlanta, GA and will report to the Technical Sourcing Leader in Procurement.

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Align Procurement sourcing strategy with R&D supplier involvement.

  • Participate in Scenario Planning

  • Understand market drivers that may influence sourcing strategy.

  • Communicate supply trends that may impact business strategy.

  • Understand and support development of new technology platforms.

  • Ground Calcium Carbonate use to extend starch in corrugated plants

  • Collaborate with Innovation Team to speed up the process from concept to commercialization.

  • Add Sourcing to the Stage Gate Process

  • Support starting with the point of concept

  • New supplier evaluation

  • Analysis of supplier and product options

  • Cost analysis

  • Support generation of joint development, exclusivity and supply agreements

  • Lead cross-sectional teams to evaluate new materials that result in operations productivity, reduce cost and risk.

  • Conduct analysis to support sourcing strategies

  • Should cost

  • Make vs buy

  • Total cost or life cycle cost

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering

  • Experience in operations, supporting heavy industrial operations or supporting R&D

  • Team leadership experience; managing teams of individuals in Operations, R&D, Finance, Legal and other groups to drive toward a specific outcome.

  • Strong analytical and planning capabilities are a must, as is the ability to appropriately summarize key issues and provide insightful guidance.

  • Proficiency in computer skills including MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills with the ability to prepare and deliver presentations to all levels in the organization, including Executive Leadership

  • Ability to easily build rapport with stakeholders and deal with conflict.

  • Ability to travel (+20%)
