Vitalief Nurse Clinician / Registered Nurse (RN) – Part-Time – Day Shift in Avenel, New Jersey

    Work Location: Avenel, NJ

    Work Hours : This is a part-time evening shift schedule – work hours are 6:00am to 2:30pm daily.   The schedule includes 3 full days one week, followed by 2 full days the following week.  Must be able to work every other weekend (including both Saturday and Sunday) and every other Holiday.

    Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care, at an Adult Diagnostic Treatment Center, to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of inmate-patients including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family within the framework established by the correctional system.

  • Performs assessments of inmate-patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary.

  • Communicates assessment data in a comprehensive, orderly fashion verbally and in writing.

  • Plans nursing care by identification of inmate-patient needs based on assessments.

  • Implements nursing care and medical care orders in knowledgeable, safe and cost-effective manner.

  • Documents nursing care and appropriate medically directed care in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.

  • Provides inmate education as an integral part of total patient care.

  • Evaluates and documents inmate-patient responses to aspects of health care and makes appropriate referrals to members of the health care team.

  • As team leader or charge nurse delegate duties to other health care team members based on their skill, knowledge and experience, and guides the provision of care by others.

  • Assists physician in minor medical/surgical procedures.

  • Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.

    Required Skills:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.

  • Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent preferred.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Nurse in a clinical and/or hospital setting.

  • Experience in a correctional setting preferred.

  • Must be CPR Certified.  

  • A valid Driver’s License is required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.

  • Must be able to work mandatory overtime and will not be able to leave until the next shift relief arrives or other coverage can be arranged and to stay in cases of an emergency.

  • As needed, the job may require emergency shift changes (day, evening, and nights) and location changes within a region and to work every other weekend (including Saturday & Sunday) and every other Holiday as per the labor management agreement.

  • Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.

  • Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(s) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds). Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments, ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting is required, intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities, ability to move from unit to unit within correctional facilities, frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls, manual dexterity and mobility for charting, hearing and sight are essential, may be required to travel within the state and ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.
