Amentum Vehicle Maintenance Technician – Mercedes-Benz Specialist in Baghdad, Iraq

The Vehicle Maintenance Technician – Mercedes-Benz Specialist will be based at one of three Amentum sites in Iraq and serve the Operations and Maintenance Support Services (OMSS) contract in support of the U.S. Department of State. This position will be responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on all site Mercedes-Benz vehicles and will report to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Comply with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide information and materials to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Properly complete the services and/or repairs for which the Technician is assigned by management or their designated representative. Produce quality work that evidence pride of workmanship.

  • Retrieve cars from designated parking areas and return to the designated pick-up area when repairs are completed. Follow key control procedures.

  • Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on Mercedes-Benz engines and vehicles for such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches. Change filters and oil. Lubricate vehicles and motor driven equipment.

  • Tune gas and diesel engines and as needed replace spark plugs, fuel filters, injectors, and turbo chargers.

  • Inform the Shop Lead or Supervisor of difficulties with repairs and the need for additional repairs.

  • Comply with manufacturer specifications throughout the repair/servicing process.

  • Practice safe work habits and use personal protective equipment as required.

  • Report to Lead or Supervisor any situation or condition that jeopardizes the safety, welfare, or integrity of the dealership, its personnel, or customers.

  • Mentor and help other technicians on the Service Team.

  • Diagnose problems, disassemble units, repair, or replace parts, and reassemble units in the following systems:

  • Brake System: Repair or replace shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, and cylinders.

  • Cooling System: Flush radiator, replace hoses and thermostat, repair or replace radiator and water pump. Drive System: Repair and replace drive shaft, differential, axle, transmission, and clutch.

  • Electrical System: Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring.

  • Exhaust and Emissions Control System: Replace mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, and pipes.

  • Heating and Air Conditioning System: Repair or replace heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharge air conditioning systems.

  • Hydraulic and Air Systems: Repair or replace hoses, valves, cylinders, compressors, and pumps.

  • Steering and Suspension System: Repairs rack and pinion steering systems. Align and balance wheels, repair or replace tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, and pumps.

  • If needed replace engines, rebuild or replace vehicle components.

  • Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts.

  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment.

  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.

  • Assist in training lower-level workers in automotive mechanic techniques, as needed.

  • Road tests vehicles to verify problems if required and to verify repairs done to vehicle.

  • Complete records, maintain tools and equipment, and perform various clean-up activities.

  • Observe and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.

  • Abide by company policy and departmental best practices and procedures.

  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum Acceptable Experience Level:

  • 5 - 10 years’ experience working with Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

  • Valid ASE or similar certification to work specifically on Mercedes-Benz vehicles/ Dealership training.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of automotive repairs and maintenance.

  • Ability to follow directions and communicate with staff and co-workers.

  • Able to use diagnostic computer systems, technical software and manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment as required.

  • Must read, interpret and transcribe data in order to maintain accurate records.

  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision and the motivation to continually increase technical skills should be evident.

  • Handle customer vehicles with care, keep them clean and take precautions to protect all customer vehicles while at the shop.

  • Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment.

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED. Tech school/training completion certificate preferred.

  • Passport, Licenses and Certifications:

  • As part of pre-contingency requirements, by the time the visa process starts , candidates must possess a valid passport of home country with a minimum of 18 months remaining to expiration date with 8 blank pages.

  • Valid drivers’ license from Home of Record.

  • Tech school/training completion certificate preferred.

  • Valid ASE or similar certification to work specifically on Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

  • Security Vetting:

  • Already possess an active DoD or DoS Secret clearance or be able to obtain a favorable Secret clearance prior to being hired.

  • Must maintain eligibility for the duration of the contract.

  • Language Skills:

  • Satisfactory English proficiency to meet job requirements and to adhere and comply with safety, health, and security measures.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

  • Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Citizenship: Must be eligible for US Government Clearance.

  • Medical: Successfully complete and pass the medical and dental examinations as required by Amentum and our customer for deployment to Iraq. Must maintain physical and dental requirements for duration of deployment.

DESIRED:

  • Relevant overseas Mercedes-Benz engine and automotive mechanical experience.

  • Previous out of home country experience and previous work experience in harsh environmental conditions are a plus.

  • Experience working with Amentum.

WORKING AND LIVING CONDITIONS:

This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120- 130 degrees Fahrenheit/50-55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
