The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is seeking an experienced Jr. Systems Administrator (Computer Network Specialist II) to work in the Office of Information Technology (IT). The Jr. Systems Administrator position provides technical support in the areas of application management, data management, and other technologies. The position provides information technology support services to staff and members and assists in keeping the network computing systems operating efficiently.

The Jr. Systems Administrator position is required to:

• Provide support for implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of IT systems.

• Provide Tier 2 support when tickets are escalated to the systems team.

• Problem identification, diagnosis, and resolution of problems.

• Perform hardware replacements within the datacenter.

• Manage the daily activities of configuration and operation of IT systems.

• Aid users in accessing and using IT systems.

• Support after hours on an as needed basis to meet the transit business unit mission.

On occasion, this position also requires the ability to work beyond normal business hours to perform system maintenance. The selected incumbent receives supervision from the Senior Systems Manager in IT.

The candidate will be required to travel between MTA locations. Glen Burnie, Washington Blvd, Cromwell Lightrail Station, and St. Paul Street Office located within Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or other information technology-related field to include course work in local or wide area microcomputer or minicomputer networks.

Experience: One (1) year of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area microcomputer or minicomputer networks. Six (6) months of of this experience must demonstrate providing Tier 2 user support.

Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).

The ideal candidate will possess:

Microsoft (MS) Certificates, A+ Certification

3-5 years’ experience with IT support and or systems administration.

3-5 years of customer experience.

Familiarity with virtual desktops and thin clients is preferred.

Basic knowledge of networking

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Notes:

  1. Thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or other information technology-related field to include coursework in local or wide area microcomputer or minicomputer networks may be substituted for the required education.

  2. An additional year of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area microcomputer or minicomputer networks may be substituted for the required education.

  3. Experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining microcomputer hardware and software; or converting data from project specifications by preparing program code using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school on a year-for-year basis.

  4. Completion of a certification program in Network Engineering or Internetwork Routing, such as Certified Novell Engineer, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert or equivalent certification program, may be substituted for the required education.
