Johns Hopkins University Sr. Research Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University department of Otolaryngology is seeking a Sr. Research Specialist who will oversee and manage multiple research projects in the Lane Research Laboratory and will work with PI (Primary Investigator) to fulfill government and private grant obligations including publications and presentations at national and international meetings. Interacts on a regular basis with adult patients, principal investigators, research study coordinators, post-doctoral fellows and other laboratory personnel.

Make intellectual contributions to scientific research interests of the lab. Collaborate with the PI to make research project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction. Contribute to writing peer reviewed manuscripts and grants. Apply independent thought to make decisions with the PI.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives.

  • Perform sophisticated data analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience.

  • In clinical lab, perform and develops clinical validations protocols.

  • Act as consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives.

  • Collaborate in the development of new technologies, protocols and use of equipment.

  • May Co-author publications.

  • Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts and manuscripts.

  • Function scientifically in lab similarly to post-doctoral fellow.

  • Independently perform all research assays specific to the research laboratory interests.

  • Will carry out experiments following new or modified protocols; performs laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, developing and optimizing processes as needed.

  • Provide training and work direction to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis such as post-doctoral fellows or trainees.

  • Hire/fire and evaluation of performance.

  • Enhance problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborations or senior researchers at meetings and or professional presentations.

  • Complete sophisticated data analysis including statistical analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience.

  • Performs IRB approved consents on human subjects and collects human samples for data analysis.

  • Independently research assays specific to the research laboratory interests.

  • Enhances problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and/or professional presentations.

  • Will work in collaboration with outside companies.

  • Maintains data for collaboration and creates invoices for reimbursement.

  • Creates figures and graphs used for grants, publications, departmental meetings, national meetings, and international meetings.

  • Routinely interacts with other laboratories, ensuring maximum efficiency in relation to personnel and logistical support.

  • Oversees purchasing of supplies, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, and maintaining laboratory records.

  • Meets with sales representatives to maximize cost effectiveness for the purchasing of new equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficiency in PC operation and software application such as MS Windows, excel, Word and Access required.

  • Excellent organizational and attention to detail skills required.

  • Must have ability to follow multiple, detailed directions of various protocols.

  • Excellent time management skills required.

  • Must have excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills.

  • Able to communicate to a wide audience.

  • Can work under tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field

  • Four years' experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.

Classified Title: Sr. Research Specialist

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/MC

Starting Salary Range: $47,500 - $83,300 Annually ($75,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8:00-4:30
