Viva Horizontals is a shared platform, product and core services team under Viva Employee Experience Organization (EXP) and are a catalyst for suite growth. The team creates foundational services and products in core suite-wide areas like access management, innovates on suite-level platforms like Viva Skills, Viva Co-pilot and are responsible for pioneering Viva’s presence on M365 Copilot. Viva Horizontals work on pivotal platform services and experiences that have a Viva-wide influence and value.

The Viva Horizontals team is looking to hire a Principal Engineer who will be responsible for architecting, developing, and operationalizing of platforms and services that power various features and scenarios across Viva suite. You will be building the next generation Viva skills and Viva Co-pilot platform components. You will design and deliver cutting-edge generative AI capabilities, building APIs, pipelines and connections with other M365 products/services, enable Substrate capabilities, and integrate horizontal product/data in the flow of work across M365. You will closely partner with engineers and teams across Microsoft to leverage other Platforms and Frameworks; innovate with product and design teams to create user experiences; collaborate with Security and Trust teams to engineer compliance controls for adoption across a wide range of customers and regulated industries.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Oversees partnerships with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., Engg Managers, Product manager, technical lead, TPMs) to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines across Viva Skills and Viva Copilot

  • Oversees teams and provide technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform. 

  • Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). 

  • Acts as a gatekeeper for product compliance, identifying and addressing security/privacy concerns. 

  • Plays a key role in shaping the system architecture that provides measurable customer value along with driving engineering and operational excellence across the product.  

  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders to drive project plans, release plans, and work items. 

  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor the service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore the service when appropriate. 

  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, scalability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale. 

  • Works with the team to improve the overall productivity through recommendations and improvements to tools and processes. 

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related technical discipline AND 10+ years experience building software and complex services.

  • 6+ years of working experience in designing, building, and managing highly available and distributed large-scale services. 

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, preferably with full stack development using C#, Java, Java script, React Native, TypeScript, Python. 

  • 5+ years of working experience with cloud services such as AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or others, and familiarity with cloud concepts such as containers, orchestration, serverless, and microservices. 

  • Experience in software engineering practices, coding and solid foundation in data structures, algorithms with proven testing, debugging and analytical skills. 

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices such as continuous integration, continuous delivery, testing, and monitoring.

  • Effective communication, collaboration skills, ability to deal with ambiguity and prioritize issues to create clarity

  • Understanding of GenAI/LLMs and related application architecture patterns

  • A passion for software engineering building resilient, operationally efficient platforms, and experiences

  • Experience working across disciplines and teams.

  • A passion for leading diverse, inclusive engineering organization. 

  • Significant developer experience that builds empathy and understanding of the developer community.
