Department Summary:

MITRE’s Collaboration Solutions Department in the Data and Human Centered Solutions Innovation Center is seeking a qualified Lead Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer to lead research in AI and Machine Learning (ML) technologies for solving problems for a safer world. The department applies human-centered engineering to AI and software development practices enabling people with diverse abilities to work together effectively across location, time, organization, work practice, and technology. The department supports a wide range of sponsors and internal customers and is active in MITRE’s internal research program. The successful candidate will design, execute, and apply research that explores human interactions with emerging AI technologies such as Large Language Models (LLM) in the context of our sponsors’ priorities and use cases.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Assist MITRE and government sponsors in defining, executing, and applying research to solve challenging collaboration problems in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense

  • Apply human-centered methods to design and evaluate human interactions with LLM, AI, and ML technologies

  • Design, conduct, and communicate human-centered research on AI, including formal experimental research and observational/naturalistic research

  • Lead complex projects, planning and guiding the work of others in conducting and applying research

  • Write proposals to conduct research and prototyping that can be applied to our sponsors’ concrete use cases and to advance public discussion about AI

  • Advocate for human-centered AI research inside and outside MITRE including shaping our organization’s strategy in Human-Centered AI; publish research and present at conferences

  • Demonstrate expertise in academic and industry best practices for human-centered AI research

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Human Factors, or related degree, or comparable job experience 

  • 5+ years of experience applying AI/ML to address research questions or concrete use cases, especially for national security or the public sector

  • 2+ years of experience specializing in generative AI including LLMs

  • Strong fundamentals in human factors, cognitive engineering, human-centered design, or another related approach to human-machine interaction

  • Experience proposing, designing, and applying research on artificial intelligence

  • Track record of published (or otherwise delivered) research papers and artifacts

  • Familiarity with general principles, constructs, and concepts underlying AI/ML tools, including generative AI

  • Experience with one or more data analysis and statistical modeling tools

  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, platforms, and systems

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

  • Demonstrated ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts comparable to those obtained with a doctoral degree in a relevant field of study

  • Ability to obtain or active DoD Secret clearance

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance

  • Experience leading research teams

  • Experience in Python or another programming language frequently used for AI/ML prototyping
