Compass Maryland Behavior Technician in Beltsville, Maryland

Compass, Inc., a progressive non-profit agency supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities located in Beltsville, Md., seeks a highly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated self-starter for the position of Behavior Technician.  This position reports to the Behavior Support Coordinator and assists with overseeing the implementation of Behavior Support Plans to include training Direct Support Professionals on how to implement the Behavior Support Plan, modeling implementation of the plan, and overseeing data collection. In addition, the Behavior Technician collaborates with the Behavior Consultants who develop the Behavior Support Plans, follows through on Behavior Support Plan recommendations, and responds to behavior related incidents and crises. The successful incumbent will be required to complete and maintain Mandt Student level certification and complete a 40- hour Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) online course, both of which will be offered by Compass. All activities must support the mission and strategic goals and objectives of Compass as well as support the Quality Advancement Department’s mission.

Job Responsibilities include the following :

  • Generate non-biased, detailed accounts of behavioral observations for Behavior Consultants and the Behavior Support Coordinator and provide structured feedback about persons supported on a regular basis.

  • Oversee data collection procedures and facilitate accurate completion of behavioral data.

  • Attend Behavior Plan trainings conducted by Behavior Consultants utilizing information presented as basis for conducting further staff training to new hires and other staff as needed.

  • Conduct comprehensive staff training on behavior plans, including modeling of behavior plans and on-site instruction on a monthly schedule and as needed.

  • Review internal incidents daily for behavior-related incidents.  Review these incidents with the Behavior Consultant, Behavior Support Coordinator, Residential Program Coordinator, House Manager, Day Services Supervisor, and QA team.

  • Provide in-person feedback, guidance and modeling to Direct Support Staff and other Program staff based on recommendations in the Behavior Support Plan.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications :  Three or more years prior experience with supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.  Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, Child Development, or other related field is preferred or otherwise completion of college-level coursework or specialized training in these fields.  High school diploma or equivalent will be considered if candidate possesses 1-2 years’ experience related to essential job functions of analyzing behavioral data and providing staff training and coordination of behavioral services.  

    The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

  • Proficiency with Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and other computer applications.

  • Excellent writing, verbal communication and active listening skills, as well as have excellent attention to detail, and possess good organization and time management skills.  

  • Current Mandt and RBT certification preferred but Mandt and RBT training will be offered by Compass for completion during first 30-60 days of employment.  

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people.

    Compensation and Work Conditions :  Starting pay is $26.00 - $28.00 an hour depending on qualifications .  Excellent benefits include health, dental, vision, short term disability and life insurance as well as 401K retirement plan with generous employer match.   Paid holidays and 15 days of paid time off (PTO.)   This position primarily works in the field traveling to other worksites/group homes to meet with and provide staff training on a monthly schedule and as needed.  Most group homes are located in Montgomery and PG County within 10 miles of our main office, but a few houses are located further away in Howard and Charles County. A valid driver’s license with clean driving record is required - mileage is reimbursed. Limited teleworking may be available.  The hours of this position are generally M-F 9a-5pm but flexing of hours to enable working some evenings or weekends as needed will be required in order to meet with staff who work evening or weekend shifts, attend or conduct training, or to attend Standing Committee meetings or to respond to a crisis.  Must be able to sit for extended periods, bend, pull, push, and lift up to 25 pounds (lifting is infrequent) and be able to perform physical demands for completing Mandt training.
