Eversource Energy Principal Engineer, Transmission System Planning (Hybrid) in Berlin, Connecticut
Principal Engineer in Transmission System Planning provides technical leadership, conducts complex system planning studies, elicits ideas for the solution of unique and/or complex engineering problems, and is accountable for major technical recommendations.
This is a hybrid job. The first 3 months are in the office.
Principal Engineer in Transmission System Planning provides technical leadership, conducts complex system planning studies, elicits ideas for the solution of unique and/or complex engineering problems, and is accountable for major technical recommendations. The Principal Engineer must have extensive experience with modeling and planning the bulk electric power system, exhibit strong technical skills to apply to long-range load forecasting, testing and planning, and leverage company and industry data to anticipate optimal design for infrastructure improvements such as AC transmission lines, battery storage, FACTS devices, Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), etc. Studies will be conducted in adherence to criteria from Eversource, ISO-New England, Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC), and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). This role also directs and prepares documents/testimony, written responses, and may testify for regulatory requirements and proceedings. This role represents the Company on regional and national transmission committees transmission planning matters for New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE as needed.
*Essential Functions: *
- Serve as a technical specialist to transmission planning in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Recognized as the technical expert both internally and externally. Ability to understand the implications and contribute to the development of the integrated power system which includes load, generation, renewables, energy markets, regulated transmission and distribution
- Lead, perform reliability and/or strategic scenario-based planning driven studies variety of existing and forecast system conditions. These studies include voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, electromagnetic transient and stability assessments.
- Use technical experience to contribute sound engineering input to develop robust, reliable, low-cost solutions.
- Exchange results but also conduct critical review of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
- Interface with ISO-New England, area transmission owners, and Eversource. departments, such as: UG and OH engineering, Substation Technical, Distributed Energy Resource (DER), Operations, and other departments to understand and mitigate electric system needs, challenges, and enable reliable future growth.
- Document and communicate results and recommendations as appropriate including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop long-range planning criteria for integrating and enabling new technologies, including but not limited to photovoltaic solar (PV), electric vehicles (EV), and battery storage.
- Directs as team or project leader the more sensitive, highly complex engineering projects, multi-discipline in nature, requiring the use of state-of-the-art/advanced technology.
- Prepare documentation and testimony in support of regulatory filings.
- Present recommendations and/or results to all levels of management as appropriate.
Other supporting tasks include:
- Actively represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees and working groups such as NATF, IEEE, state public utility commissions
- Demonstrate self-sufficiency and support Eversource team by demonstrating accountability, consistency, and cooperation with all departments.
- Mentor and provide and technical training to other engineers.
- Perform an emergent storm assignment as needed during times of inclement weather or adverse system conditions.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
- Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
- Detailed knowledge and experience producing results and conclusions using power system modeling and simulation software for steady state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients.
- Advanced technical understanding of HVDC and inverter-based resource parameters and modeling, including extensive simulation experience in weak grid systems.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
- Essential Software Proficiency includes PSSE, PSCAD, Microsoft Office 365; Word, Excel, Visio, SharePoint, OneDrive. Programming experience highly desirable: Python, VBA. Simulation software highly desirable: ASPEN Oneliner, EMTP (ATP), TARA, PI Processbook.
- Experience required applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO-NE planning procedures.
- Has demonstrated, through experience, very high standards of professional and technical competence, and a complete and thorough knowledge of technical skills including system-wide application of his/her discipline.
- Initiative and aggressiveness to search out problem areas, creativity to devise technically sound solutions and confidence to make technical decisions in solving complex problems based largely on own effort with little or no supervision.
- Possess highly developed communication skills, i.e., ability to write clearly and concisely, make presentations internally and externally
- Thorough knowledge of federal, industry codes, and standards applicable to the Eversource transmission system.
- Knowledge of state and local regulatory regulations are highly desirable
- Thorough knowledge of accounting and engineering economics applicable to the specific area of the position.
- Ability to provide work direction for others, assume authority and be assertive. Contributes to the success of the team.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret information and be aware of strategic implications in order to propose decisions with respect to the specific area of the position in solving highly complex problems.
- Ability to grasp concepts, analyze technical information, determine facts, be sensitive to underlying issues, and make well thought out recommendations/decisions.
- Self-imposes standards of excellence and has the ability to achieve desired results by assuming responsibility and accountability. Demonstrated ability and initiative to solve and/or anticipate problems and recognize the overall consequences to the business unit.
- Highly confident, self-starting individual with strong initiative.
Education:
- Master’s degree in engineering or science field required.
- Ph.D. degree in engineering preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of ten years specialized experience in transmission planning, software simulations, and IBR modeling
- Licenses & Certifications: PE License preferred

$146,500.00-$162,780.00
