Job Description

What your new role will entail;

We are recruiting a Senior Principal Designer to act as the Principal Design Discipline Lead for the Environment, Water & Energy (EWE) business (Associate Director level position). The role is open to candidates across the UK, in alignment with major cities and towns . The Principal Design discipline has been newly formed within EWE in the last 12 months, made up of existing EWE Principal Designer and newly qualified Principal Designers from within the business, together with external recruits. The focus of the Principal Designer discipline is to support our internal teams in the delivery of project, and at this time is not a stand alone P&L.

The Principal Designer Discipline Lead will implement AECOM’s proactive principal designer approach across EWE and will be expected to establish positive engagement, providing support, and sharing of CDM knowledge through engagements with our employees, managers, and leaders of EWE. Always promoting best practice and supporting our safety culture.

The Principal Designer Lead will ensure our high quality standards across the Principal Designer team, overseeing the execution of projects, and be hands on delivering projects on a 50 / 50 basis.

Role requirements within above scope:

  • Be a Safety Champion - Be a visible champion for health (including wellbeing), safety and environment, promoting continuous improvement and innovation, to promote and build a mature safety culture in line with AECOM policies, procedures, and SH&E approach.

  • Be Proactive – EWE’s Principal Designer and overarching SH&E approach is based on proactive interaction and delivery. Our Principal Designers lead the pre-construction phase, drives risk reduction, communication, cooperation, coordinates the transition from design through to the construction phase and health and safety file production, adding value to our projects and for our clients.

  • Deliver Excellence – Drive quality and value add, in every task undertaken and delivered within the role scope. Act as the lead verifier for the principal design discipline.

  • CDM Promotion – Develop and implement strategies to promote CDM awareness throughout EWE, ensuring accurate client engagement, time allowance, timely contact with the Principal Designer team, to ensure effective delivery of Principal Designer services and wider CDM compliance.

  • Provide CDM, Support, Advice & Guidance – Provide competent CDM advice to all EWE employees and our clients to ensure our statutory duties and those of our clients are executed effectively.

  • Management Systems Implementation – Develop, enhance, continually improve, and promote procedures and process requirements across your operational reach to encourage compliance and support our safety culture.

  • Project Oversight – Complete monthly reviews of all live Principal Design projects, ensuring alignment to internal, client and legislative requirements.

  • Proposal Preparation – Be the focal point for the preparation of proposals, ensuring sufficient time and budgets have been allowed to ensure quality principal design delivery. Support EWE tendering teams in providing quality tender responses.

  • Resource – Monitor resource levels vs. pipeline commitments, recruiting / developing additional resources to meet business demand.

  • Wellbeing – Support employees wellbeing through AECOM initiatives, engagement, check-ins and take appropriate action to safeguard health.

  • Mentor and Support Junior Staff – Work with junior Principal Designers and project delivery staff, provide mentoring, advice, support and guidance.

  • Monthly Reviews and Reports – Contribute to the review of monthly safety and health data, acting where appropriate and formulating SH&E Reports.

  • SH&E Promotion - Assist in the implementation of AECOM behavioural, safety and health campaigns, monitoring outcomes and reporting on the program effectiveness.

Being part of the team;

You will be joining a long-established, high-performing team in the delivery of the full range of consultancy services to strategic clients nationwide. You’ll be a key member of the SH&E Team, working with your peers to drive growth and delivery objectives in the provision of Health and Safety services, with a particular focus of Principal Design.

The role reports into the EWE SH&E Director, UK&I, you will support the develop of our existing Principal Designer resource and work within an environment which supports career progression.

Areas of immediate focus surround renewables, national energy infrastructure, water infrastructure, remediation, and ground investigation supporting UK government regional investment zones. You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve this.

Here’s what we will need from you;

  • Design / engineering degree and professional membership.

  • Incorporated Member of the Association of Project Safety.

  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety, or similar health and safety qualification.

  • Experience leading a Principal Designer team.

  • Experience in delivering both Principal Designer and Client CDM Advisor role

  • Experience developing and improving management systems.

  • Experience writing tenders and proposals.

  • Skilled in project management with the capability to oversee and guide.
