Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Law Enforcement Lieutenant - Boca Raton, FL.

Under supervision and general direction of the Deputy Chief of Police this position while administrative in nature must assist in directing the organization, staffing and operational activities for law enforcement operations and public safety activities at the university. This position requires a certified law enforcement officer, vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Supervise people whose duties include the investigation, pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators.

  • Directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for assigned services and activities; assigns work activities and projects; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.

  • Responsible for selecting, scheduling, training, deploying, motivating, and evaluating assigned personnel.

  • Provide/coordinate staff training with employees to correct deficiencies and implement discipline procedures. The Lieutenant must ensure that statutes, administrative rules, case law, policies, and procedures governing agency actions are applied in a consistent and fair manner.

  • Directs and participates in the investigation of crimes and other related law enforcement incidents of importance, oversees enforcement operations related to law enforcement, coordinates security, staff assignments, and traffic control for university special events.

  • Responds to major incidents reported to the Police department; assumes role as Incident Commander or another role as needed for the situation.

  • Assists the training coordinator with departmental programs necessary for maintaining law enforcement certification.

  • Reviews, corrects and approves the preparation of police reports and records.

  • Prepares and updates departmental general orders, standing operating procedures and other policies.

  • Maintains liaison with the administrators of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the implementation and coordination of law enforcement programs of the department.

  • Provides staff assistance to the Law Enforcement Captain.

  • Performs other duties or assignments as deemed appropriate by the Chief of Police.

  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings and committees; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.

  • Since specific regulations and policies do not cover all situations, sound judgment and good management is required on a daily basis.

  • The Lieutenant participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities related to law enforcement and public safety activities at the university; recommends and implements resulting policies and procedures.

  • Continuous contact and verbal communication with personnel supervised and daily internal contact with students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. Routine interaction with external law enforcement agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma and four years of appropriate experience required.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Certification required.

Ability to work in stressful and sometimes hazardous conditions required.

Ability to safely operate a patrol vehicle and emergency equipment required.

Ability to communicate effectively required.

Ability to grasp criminal and traffic laws: make sound decisions required.

Ability to exercise restraint and tact with all members of the University community and the general public required.

Ability to physically and mentally satisfy state and departmental training requirements required.

Ability to effectively work without direct supervision required.

Ability to work well with fellow officers: teamwork concept required.

Salary:

$90,000 per year.
