Job Description

Laboratory Protection's Access Control team facilitates access to NREL facilities for employees, visitors, guests, partners, subcontractors, and VIPs. We are seeking an enthusiastic Access Control Specialist to join the Laboratory Protection Safeguards and Security group.

Are you ready to utilize your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse population of visitors, employees, and subcontractors, to ensure a secure and safe environment for the NREL community?

The successful candidate will:

  • Process visitors and issue access badges to NREL in alignment with established policies and procedures aiming to minimize potential risks to the security and safety of NREL employees, visitors, facilities, and operations.

  • Verify the identification of all visitors, ensuring sponsorship and proper clearance for entry.

  • Assess visitors' access needs, issue appropriate visitor badges, and promptly inform hosts upon visitor arrival.

  • Manage and facilitate vendor, construction, and delivery access processes efficiently and accurately.

  • Effectively coordinate and communicate access requirements to both visitors and staff in a timely and professional manner.

  • Maintain accurate records of badging and visitor activity through meticulous management of badging and visitor logs and reports.

  • Receive and promptly respond to all correspondence and communication in a professional manner.

  • Administer and upkeep precise records of physical keys and access badges in accordance with DOE regulations.

  • Preserve the integrity of data, files, equipment, and supplies related to badging, including handling confidential and protected information with care.

  • Engage regularly with NREL staff, management, visitors, and external agencies, demonstrating professional and welcoming communication skills while adhering to access control protocols.

  • Collaborate effectively with Laboratory Protection staff to maintain strong communication and foster a spirit of cooperation within the team.

Schedule & Hours

Access Control personnel typically work Monday through Friday at NREL’s South Table Mountain and Flatirons campuses. There may be instances where

occasional evenings, weekends, and overtime are necessary to provide support for special events.

Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Full knowledge of specialized focused business support functions. Complete understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the business support activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Fully competent in applicable software packages and office equipment. Demonstrated project administration skills. Full knowledge of specific principles, procedures and practices related to supported fields and disciplines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, team and interpersonal skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

HSPD-12 Position of Public Trust: Must be able to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 Public Trust credential for a position as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, which includes a favorable background investigation of the appropriate tier.

  • Prior experience in access control is preferred.

  • Previous experience maintaining key control databases and overseeing issuance protocols is preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Specialist III / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
