Position Details

General Statement

Responsible for assisting the Montana State University’s Men’s & Women’s Track & Field & Cross Country programs in Bozeman, Montana. Responsibilities include: coaching of horizontal jumping events as well as other coaching duties as assigned, fiscal management, student-athlete welfare, academic integrity, public relations, sport-specific fund raising, rules compliance, and planning and implementation of practices and game strategies. The Assistant Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Coach reports directly to the Head Men’s & Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country Coach.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, including adhering to all Departmental, University, Big Sky Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations; cooperate with all coaches and administrative staff within the intercollegiate athletics programs to enhance overall departmental operations.

  • Assist with scouting and recruitment of student-athletes, specifically with on- and off-campus visits of prospective student-athletes, as assigned.

  • Assist in coaching student-athletes including evaluating their performance in practices and competition and providing leadership and instruction in areas of deficiencies, as required.

  • Monitor the conditioning and training of student-athletes in conjunction with the strength and conditioning coaches and athletic training staff. Assist in planning and administering the off-season training program.

  • Counsel team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters, including consulting with the Head Coach, the Academic coordinator, and the respective Sport Administrator and other university administrators to resolve problems. Assist in monitoring the academic progress and eligibility status of student-athletes including class and study hall attendance.

  • Attend coaches preparatory meetings and implement strategies resulting from these meetings. Assist with the development of schedules for practice and competition, as assigned, including interfacing with departmental administrators.

  • Advise and counsel student-athletes regarding their obligations to comply with all rules and regulations related to financial aid and eligibility as well as personal conduct and appearance.

  • Participate in public relations activities, as requested, including granting interviews with newspapers, radio and TV media, attending press conferences, and making public appearances. Consult with assigned sports information staff regarding game preparations and media relations. Represent the Department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events, as requested. with planning and coordinating approved fund raising activities, as assigned.

  • Assist with budget preparations, as requested, and operate within approved budget allocations; assist with planning and coordinating approved fund raising activities, as assigned.

  • Assist in coordinating team travel arrangements, as requested. Travel with the team and monitor the conduct of student-athletes.

  • Coordinate with the equipment manager to ensure the necessary athletic equipment is available for scheduled practices and competitive events; monitor the condition of equipment; request repairs or replacement as necessary.

  • Participate in clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.

  • Perform all other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach, the sport administrator, and/or the Director of Athletics.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Background of competition or coaching in track & field at the professional, collegiate, or high school level.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Successful track & field coaching and/or athletic experience with a focus on horizontal jumping events as well as familiarity with other jumping, sprint, and hurdle events.

  • Possess technological wherewithal to build and maintaining a recruiting database and various necessary tasks required of a NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country program.

  • Knowledge of/commitment to NCAA rules specifically regarding recruiting.

  • Experience developing and motivating students for athletic and academic success.

  • Demonstrated wherewithal to coach, recruit, and monitor for NCAA compliance at the NCAA Division I level.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Salary is prorated for partial months of employment. Appointments are up to one-year in length and based on need and financial resources. Appointments may be renewed on an annual basis.

This position requires travel during the year for competition and recruitment.
