Operating Room (OR) Surgical Technician Job, Full-Time

Signature Healthcare’s Brockton Hospital is hiring for a Full-Time Operating Room (OR) Surgical Technician in Brockton, MA.

Operating Room (OR) Surgical Technician Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Exercises surgical aseptic technique in preparation for and during surgery and adheres to all regulatory requirements (i.e. Personnel Protective Equipment use)

  • Assists with preparation of Operating Room in anticipation of specific surgical procedures. Setting up surgical suite with equipment and instruments and supplies. Requires moving large machines lifting instrument trays (weighing 25 - 30 lbs.) and pushing carts.

  • Assists with preservation and labeling of operative specimens for laboratory analysis.

  • Assists with care, cleaning, storage and inventory of supplies and equipment.

  • Maintains orderly and clean work area. Maintains appropriate stock levels.

  • Assists with transportation of preoperative patients to the Operating Room which requires ability to push stretchers.

  • Assists with sterilization of instruments and equipment weighing 25-30 lbs. and movement or manipulation of special large equipment.

  • Assists with positioning, skin preparation and draping of patients which requires the ability to lift up to 35 lbs.

  • Anticipates surgeon's needs and places appropriate instruments, sponges, sutures and related materials and supplies at the field immediately available for use during progress of surgery.

  • Controls the location of contaminated instruments and supplies to prevent spread of infection.

  • Performs surgical scrubs and shaves to assigned preoperative patients.

  • Labels medications transferred to the sterile field from the registered nurse. Delivers medication to surgeon for administration.

  • Continuously strives to improve room turnovers, anticipating needs for next cases.

  • Cares for all OR equipment, returning equipment to proper locations, and assisting in the removal of malfunctioning equipment with the malfunction clearly identified.

  • Cares for instrumentation, protecting delicate instrumentation, clearly identifying instrumentation needing repair and removing it from service and clearly labeling and identifying equipment problem. Ensures that sub sterile areas are clear of all equipment at the end of the shift.

  • Performs accurate instrument, sponge and needle counts.

  • Contributes to preference card updates and facilitates communication from surgeons to appropriate resources.

  • Prepares for OR case by assembling appropriate supplies completely and accurately. Independently follows up on additional needs.

  • Independently researches procedures, equipment, and policies to maintain current practice. Promptly signs off on staff meetings, communication book entries, policy changes, OR educational modules and other educational resources.

  • Confirms daily sterilizer Quality Assurance in the absence of equipment technician.

  • Consistently assists other staff when not in a case.

  • Carefully disposes of sharps in appropriate container before case counts leave the room.

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  • Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).

  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of accredited Surgical Technologist program required.

  • Preferred Minimum of 1-year experience, will consider a beginning practitioner. On-call responsibility with a 30-minute response time to the hospital. New graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of graduation date.

  • Requires current BLS certification, current Surgical Technologist Certification required.
