    INSTRUCTIONAL COACH (STEM) JOB DESCRIPTION

    Under the supervision of the Principal, the Instructional Coach supports teachers in the implementation of the school’s instructional programs to ensure high academic success for all students. This coach primarily provides support to mathematics and science teachers, although the coach also works with support teachers (special education and ENL), and teachers of other subjects (health, physical education, and the arts). The instructional coach provides classroom-based modeling and demonstrations, coaches and mentors individual teachers, facilitates teacher inquiry groups, and provides large format professional development.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports teachers in the effective implementation of shared FLACS network curriculum that ensures high levels of academic achievement.

  • Supports teachers in implementing pedagogical strategies that reflects a balance between student exploration and explicitly targeted instruction.

  • Coaches, mentors, models strategies for, and plans with individual teachers to improve teacher effectiveness and increase student engagement, in which students build excitement, ownership, and independence of their learning. 

  • Works with the school leaders and the network curriculum specialists to create school-wide goals for professional development that support student achievement in alignment with the network mission and vision. 

  • Leads teacher teams and professional learning communities to improve professional practice.

  • Develops and implements professional development sessions for groups of teachers.

  • Participates in and/or leads data meetings with teachers to examine student work,  monitor progress on assessments, and create action plans to address student needs. 

  • Participates in child study meetings concerning the academic progress of at-risk students who are not responding to interventions. 

  • Collaborates with the network curriculum specialists and instructional coaches at other FLACS sites to build capacity and share best practices across the network.

  • Collaborates with other school and network staff members on special initiatives. 

  • Participates fully in professional development opportunities and professional research to stay up-to-date with current educational research.

  • Engages and collaborates with colleagues and the community to develop and sustain a common culture that supports high expectations for student learning.

  • Demonstrates self-motivation and willingness to be a team player.

     Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required

  • NYS teaching certification in a relevant area

  • At least 5 years of successful teaching in a relevant content/grade band. 

  • Previous coaching or mentoring experience strongly preferred

  • NYS fingerprint clearance and background check
