Description of Job

Work Unit:

This work unit exists to perform inspections, investigations, compliance assistance and other assigned duties across the state, that are necessary to accomplish the mission and purpose of regulatory and other programs within the purview of the Division of Plant Industry, Colorado Department of Agriculture.

The various programs within the division deal with consumer protection, environmental protection, industry practices, worker safety, agricultural commodities production and export, and related issues. The unit’s external customers include pesticide users, agricultural producers, and processors of agricultural commodities, exporters of agricultural commodities, other sectors of agricultural industries, and other entities, in support of the overall division mission.

Position:

This is an entry level position that performs necessary field and other assigned duties, in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. The position works under the direction of the Plant Industry Field Service Supervisor in cooperation with various program managers to: enforce laws and rules and perform other functions pertaining to pesticides, pesticide applicators, and performs other duties as assigned.

Work includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Inspection - Inspects commodities, crops, facilities, and other items to determine compliance with statutes and other requirements.

  • Investigation - Investigates alleged violations related to certain statutes and collects evidence and official samples related to alleged or possible violation of laws, rules or for other purposes.

  • Communication - Disseminates information, informs, or instructs supervisors, coworkers, regulated entities and the public about the agencies underlying rationale, motive, intent, laws, rules, and policies.

  • Reporting - Creates or compiles reports and findings regarding inspections and investigations and submits them to program managers.

  • Enforcement - Issues legal documents for enforcement purposes.

Position will travel overnight including up to one or more consecutive weeks at a time approximately 30-35% of the work year; and lift up to 50 pounds.

Salary Range:

$22.16 - $26.59 Hourly

$46,092.00 - $55,308.00 Annually

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, appointments are typically made at or near the range minimum.

Minimum Requirements:

Proven Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Four (4) years of professional experience in a regulatory capacity, and/or professional pesticide related activities.

    OR

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field of study related to plants or pest management such as: horticulture, biology, botany, or other plant related natural science field.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant years of state service;

  • Background in Investigations

  • Background in Inspections

  • Bilingual in Spanish

Substitutions:

  • Qualifying Education will substitute for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License with the ability to independently travel.

  • Circumstances may require position to work outside of regular business hours.

  • Position will travel overnight including up to one or more consecutive weeks at a time approximately 30-35% of the work year.

  • Position will need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
