Brief Job Description

The Director of Residence Life reports to the Associate Dean of Students and provides leadership in creating and sustaining a residential climate that promotes growth and encourages engagement in a comprehensive student learning experience. The Director of Residence Life is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and management to the area of Residence Life, which includes policy development, implementation and promotion throughout the university community as well as ensuring the integrity of residential technologies and housing records. The Director serves as a campus liaison to the community for Residence Life and promotes successful out of the class learning experiences for students specifically around community development, cocurricular learning and understanding of housing policies and procedures.

The position leads a very busy office and supervises a dynamic team of professional staff, secretarial and student staff and works closely with leaders in Student Affairs and across the campus. The position requires someone with a flexible schedule to include working occasional nights and weekends. The Director serves as officer in charge in the absence of the Associate Dean of Students.

This title is in Appendix A of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees and, as a consequence, incumbents serving in this title are not eligible for permanent appointment (tenure), but, instead receive five year renewable term appointments after the first three years in title.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or Higher Education Administration or similar field; Demonstrated understanding of the role Residence Life plays in student

success/retention; Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and social justice; Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and technical skills; Demonstrated progressively responsible supervisory experience of professional staff;

Demonstrated knowledge of assessment practice in Student Affairs work; Demonstrated knowledge, experience and ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff; Demonstrated experience in planning and executing large-scale, campus-wide programs; and Experience with budget management.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous professional experience in Residence Life or Student Affairs;Direct experience managing on-campus housing preferably at the Director level;Prior facilities management experience
