Scheduled Work Hours:Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Other hours as required) Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This central engineering position will execute engineering projects, studies, tasks, and duties aligned with Evergy’s power generation needs. Work closely with Generation Leadership, Plant Management, Plant Operations, Environmental, Real Estate, Engineering, and other Generation work groups, assisting with a wide variety of technical issues. Develop studies, plans, criteria, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, performance assessments, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, and budgets, as required. Provide consultation and recommendations to various business units and/or customers within Evergy.
General Duties and Responsibilities * Provide Engineering and Project Management support for capital projects at existing generation facilities * Coordinate and conduct applied research, make logical analyses, prepare reports, and maintain current market information on relevant emerging technologies. * Evaluate, develop, and implement projects that have positive financial/operational impact. * Interpret regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles necessary to perform assignments. * Continuous development of engineering/professional skills. * Implements strategic and specific goals established by business unit leadership * Review specifications, drawings, and other contract documents for compliance with internal standards and external regulatory requirements. * Provide budget development and project updates for assigned capital projects. Specific Role

This position is focused on environmental-related projects and evaluating/implementing emerging generation technologies.

  • Manage design, procurement, and construction activities for Environmental projects.
  • Produce conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and business models for evaluating different types of emerging technology projects.
  • Manage active files on a variety of different emerging technologies, including a summary document that outlines Evergy’s research and positions.
  • Perform tasks related to all types of electric generating facilities, including emerging technologies that are being evaluated by Evergy – on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist in the pursuit of external project funding (Federal, State, & Private).
  • Assist in techno-economic analysis and technical due diligence of wholesale electrical generation technologies
  • Provides measurable input into new processes, emerging technical standards and/ or plans that will have significant impact on the achievement of overall business unit results.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited university (ABET) required.
  • Broad experience with emerging and existing generation technologies
  • Cross-discipline engineering experience.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of generation technologies and related business models,
  • In-depth knowledge of energy issues, technologies, markets, the electric utility industry, and relevant state and federal requirements.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems/processes.
  • Ability to inform and influence decisions based on objective analysis.
  • Ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Application of engineering principles to a broad range of requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles and practices related to Safety.
  • Technical writing skills and experience specifying requirements in detailed utility scale contracts
  • Desire for continuous improvement / learning and innovating
  • Strong background in R&D, Innovation, creation of pilot and proof of concept programs and measurement, and strategic thinking.
  • Able to clearly articulate a vision and maturation path a variety of generation technologies.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing:

  • Registered Professional Engineer preferred.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred.

Working Conditions: Primarily office and hybrid work from home. Regular field work at existing facilities and new construction sites, generally within a commuting distance. Occasional overnight travel depending on assignment.
