Corrosion Technician – West Texas BANGL System

Overview:

This Cathodic Protection Technician position would be located in one of the following locations Midland (TX), Odessa (TX), Midkiff (TX), Cotulla (TX) or anywhere along a pipeline system connecting the Permian Basin area to Cotulla (TX). This position works in and around petroleum products and executes various corrosion management field tasks. The successful candidate will perform such duties as: collect and analyze corrosion control data; ensure conformance with all regulations in support of DOT, Environmental, Safety, and Regulatory compliance; maintain all equipment utilized for the application of cathodic protection; and perform cathodic protection interference testing. Overnight travel up to 40% of the time. Call-outs and overtime will be required on an as-needed basis. The Corrosion Management department of Marathon Pipe Line LLC tests and maintains cathodic protection systems for more than 8,200 miles of underground pipelines, 85 terminals, and 8 refineries. The successful candidate is required to live within 1 hr of the reporting location.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze corrosion control data from test points, rectifiers, bonds, AC mitigation and casings via handheld data logger during annual surveys or as needed.

  • Perform maintenance tasks such as locating and repairing cathodic protection cable breaks, troubleshooting and repairing test stations, rectifiers, RMUs (remote monitoring units), bonds, AC mitigation systems and commissioning or adjusting cathodic protection systems to ensure properly balanced.

  • Install new test stations, RMUs and bonds

  • Adjust rectifier outputs up or down

  • Perform atmospheric coating inspections

  • Perform pin brazing and/or cad welds

  • Perform electrical isolation testing on dielectric components

  • Obtain soil resistivity data using Wenner 4 pin method

  • Obtain ultrasonic thickness measurements

  • Operate a locator and/or pipeline current mapper (PCM)

  • Ensure conformance with all regulations in support of PHMSA (DOT), other regulatory requirements and company standards

  • Perform cathodic protection interference testing

  • Coordinate rectifier interruption plans with other local operators

  • Analyze and communicate cathodic protection data to the appropriate corrosion specialists and/or corrosion engineer as required

  • Complete all required training

  • Perform all tasks in a safe and environmentally conscious manner in accordance with all Environmental, Safety, and Regulatory requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree in a technical field preferred

  • Minimum of a AMPP CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester) certification required

  • 3 – 5 years of experience in the corrosion field preferred

  • Company vehicle provided

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required

  • Proficiency in basic computer skills

  • Previous pipeline experience is a plus

  • Will be required to pass Operator Qualifications to work on DOT assets
