Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or parks building and grounds work will substitute for the required experience. Training will be credited in six month increments.

NOTE:

Custodial building maintenance is not qualifying.

Examples of building construction trades include cabinetmaker, carpenter, concrete finisher, electrician, HVAC controls technician, HVAC mechanic, ironworker, millwright, painter, pipefitter, plasterer, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, roofer, sheet metal worker, steamfitter, tile setter and welder.

Examples of building maintenance include Maintenance Repairer 1/2, B/G/E Maintenance Repairer 1/2 and Maintenance Repair Foreman.

Examples of repair/maintenance of mechanical equipment include Operating Engineer 1/2, auto mechanic, Mobile Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Mobile Equipment Overhaul Mechanic and Mobile Equipment Master Mechanic.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To make minor repairs to buildings, facilities, grounds, navigational locks, and light equipment/appliances or to perform general maintenance on marine vessels and all related facilities.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Supervision Received:

Close from a Maintenance Foreman, supervisor, or administrator of higher level.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

Job Distinctions:

Differs from laborer, grounds maintenance, and custodial jobs by performance of a wide range of basic maintenance and repair responsibilities.

Differs from other maintenance jobs by limitation to basic or minor repairs to buildings, facilities, light equipment, or marine vessels.

Examples of Work

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of maintenance/ physical/ custodial/clerical tasks to include conducting repairs and preventive maintenance to state park facilities, operating and repairing equipment and performing grounds maintenance, collecting litter and emptying the trash containers, training volunteers and new employees, cleaning various park buildings.

25% Preventive Maintenance

  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of site's equipment including plumbing, wood repair and changing breakers and power receptacles. Performs maintenance of facilities, grounds and support facilities.

  • Makes general repairs to buildings' interiors and exteriors, furniture, fixtures, air conditioning, heating, systems, and other mechanical and related fields such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical and painting tasks.

  • Maintains and makes general repairs to a variety of motorized equipment including tune ups, replaces and adjusts worn or damage parts and assembles major components to determine the extent of damage and repairs necessary, Makes limited repairs to appliances, replaces parts and makes adjustments, etc.

  • Starts, operates and checks for safety and maintenance a wide variety of hand-held equipment, motorized vehicles, tractors, etc.

  • Repairs and treats structures such as floors, showers, sinks, walls, and roofs. Performs minor trouble shooting, repairs, and adjustments of locks.

25% Equipment Operation and Control

  • Operates large equipment, vehicles, utility vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, front-end mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, blowers, manual pumps, bulldozers, backhoes, tractors, lawn mowers, trimmers and chain saw to carry out maintenance of the grounds and nature trail.

  • Properly uses tools ranging from common hand and blower tools such as hammers, hoists, drills, and wrenches, to precision measurements and electronic testing devices.

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, or the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.

  • Utilizes attachments such as sweeper, loader fork, and front loader.

  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary. Estimate repair costs.

  • Performs periodic safety checks to ensure a safe and clean environment and to eliminate hazards.

    20% Grounds Maintenance

  • Maintains grounds in a clean and orderly manner to include mowing, and trimming. Trim tree branches.

  • Performs general road maintenance tasks.

10% Maintaining Cleanliness

  • Cleans interior and exterior of facilities at site. Stocks site buildings with cleaning and household supplies.

  • Sweeps, mops, and washes site facilities; removes trash. Cleans furniture. Collects litter and debris.

  • Cleans site grounds and facilities, RV and beach camping sites including tables and grills.

10% Water Management

  • Retains current training and certifications to meet state requirements to maintain mandatory wastewater treatment facility and equipment.

  • Performs routine, dally, weekly, and monthly checks and inspections of wastewater treatment plants, waste water collection lines, effluent lines, and lift stations as required.

  • Maintains proper records as required.

  • Maintains public water systems to include, but not limited to, public community water supply system.

  • Repairs equipment and supply line as situations dictate.

10% Administrative Support/Training

  • Collects fees from visitors. Answers telephone inquiries. Provides information and answers inquiries for site guests. Operates the program used to process park visitors.

  • Follow purchasing procedures and maintain required records.

  • Provides training to volunteers and new employees on proper operation of equipment and cleaning.

Performs other related duties as assigned and performs customer service to a high degree of excellence.
