Summary About the Position: Performs journeyman level maintenance for mechanical, pneumatic and other systems at a high-lift lock and dam facility. Performs and participates in a variety of diagnostic inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of associated lock and dam appurtenances. Located in Chattanooga, TN. Responsibilities Inspect, adjust, lubricate, test, install, calibrate, and/or perform major and minor repairs at regularly scheduled intervals. Inspect, troubleshoot, and/or rebuilds diesel and gasoline engines of associated equipment at the facility (such as various equipment, bulkhead hoists, generators, pneumatic pumps, air compressors, etc.). Perform repairs and installations of mechanical systems. Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities. Perform installation of new equipment, maintenance, repair, overhaul or replacement of parts, systems, equipment, etc., normally associated with the building, grounds and utilities of such facilities. Maintain project administrative maintenance records in connection with all preventive maintenance and repairs for project mechanical and pneumatic, mobile land plant, floating plant, and inventory management. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. WY-10 --Perform complex repair and installation of mechanical systems, perform preventative maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections, and rebuild lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at a navigational facility. I independently select and use a wide variety of available hand and power tools, equipment, measuring devices and materials, along with applicable methods, techniques and procedures specific to mechanical, pneumatic, and mechanic work such as diagnosis, testing, repair or modification, and installation. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Routinely lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders and poles. Machinery on high lift structures is large and requires the skills of a heavy construction mechanic to effect repair or replacement. Work is performed indoors and outdoors during the day or night subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical equipment, on scaffolds and from slings or floating plant. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury, or discomfort and when inside, exposure to moving machinery, electrical circuits and loud noises, and at times, dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
