What you’ll be doing

The role is a professional responsible for ensuring proper application of US GAAP accounting pronouncements across the CIBC US region. The role manages professionals, managers and operational support employees, developing and maintaining productive and collaborative working relationships with internal and external business partners and stakeholders. This role provides financial accounting advisory services to business partners on a regular basis. The role often incorporates innovation into daily execution and management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with accountants and non-accountants in front, middle, and back office functions to ensure consistent application of US GAAP accounting principles in various topic areas including loan syndications and participations, loan modifications, nonrefundable loan fees, credit losses, marketable and non-marketable investments, goodwill, revenue recognition, derivatives and hedging, leases, stock-based compensation, and consolidation.

  • Research and communicate Accounting Policy's view and approach to accounting for new and existing transactions to internal and external stakeholders, including Bank executives and external auditors. Work closely with CIBC Toronto Accounting Policy to determine US GAAP to IFRS differences.

  • Assist with a variety of US and cross-border transactions and initiatives to ensure US GAAP accounting objectives, risks, and outcomes are appropriately considered.

  • Write, update, and maintain Accounting Policy requirements documents and technical accounting memoranda to support the Bank's application of US GAAP accounting rules.

  • Facilitate and coordinate the implementation of new accounting standards and policies to ensure compliance with US GAAP. Work closely with other Bank departments to promote awareness of new accounting standards, identify areas of impact, and assist in implementation of processes to ensure accounting requirements and operational requirements are met.

  • Network with accounting policy departments at other banks, industry groups, and accounting firms to stay up-to-date on industry issues and hot topics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required; CPA is preferred

  • 6-8 years of experience at a Big 4 accounting firm, Bank or Financial Institution

  • Experience with US GAAP is essential

  • Strong written and verbal communication, accounting research, attention to detail & time management skills are needed
