Inside L’Oréal’s Research & Innovation Division, Development is responsible for working closely with our over 42 brands to adapt and innovate formulations into new and exciting products based on consumer and marketing insights . In Open Development , our scientists work closely with external manufacturers to develop and refine formulas to meet the needs and expectations of our consumers. Development of great products requires building strong, international collaborations across different functions to ensure that products are seen from inception to officialization for our local and global launch deadlines.

We are seeking a talented and innovative Senior Chemist II to join Hair Care & Styling Development team in our Clark, NJ facility for Research & Innovation. This role is responsible for creating, coordinating, and implementing innovative hair care & style product development programs to support professional brand/category innovation strategies. In this role you will develop technically robust formulation solutions that adhere to safety, regulatory and quality best practices/requirements as well as ensuring smooth transition of innovative products and their corresponding technologies through the product develop process culminating in transfer to manufacturing. This role requires scientific expertise, ability to function as a product champion and ability to work in a matrix reporting organization and function in a team consensus environment with both local R&I and International Teams.

As a Senior Chemist II in Hair Care & Styling Development, your main responsibilities are:

  • Develop and implement new Hair Care & Hair Style innovations.

  • Propose new technical concepts in the field of Hair Care & Style

  • Work closely with the scale-up, global marketing, claims, product safety, regulatory and evaluation testing centers to ensure smooth transition of new products and technologies through the product development process

  • Communicate and present the technology of new products to colleagues from different geographic locations, functions and stakeholders within the company

  • Maintain good knowledge of competitor’s patent environments, consumer insights, need gaps as well as emerging marketing trends

  • Provide training and mentoring to technical project staff. Supervise technical staff on project basis

    To Succeed In This Position, you have:

  • A completed Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science is required. Masters or PhD preferred.

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in hair products R&D and product formulation, is required.

  • Advanced formulation, analytical and project management skills preferred

  • Ability to work independently on projects from inception to officialization to meet launch requirements and deadlines to drive projects forward with minimum supervision

  • Ability to lead project team members and share expertise

  • Demonstrated creativity and resourcefulness in solving technical problems that may arise during product development or in the transfer of the technology to manufacturing

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable IT and R&I laboratory systems

  • The ability to lift 35 lbs (11.3 kg) (required)

  • The ability to be onsite, in the office as this is an essential function of the position (required)

  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis, without the need for legal sponsorship now or in the future (required).
