Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a highly responsible Environmental Health Specialist position working in the Environmental Health (EH) Section at the Wakulla County Health Department. This position is responsible for a variety of duties including maintaining mosquito program, providing mosquito control services, monitoring spray requests, assisting with maintenance of water programs and completing a variety of facility inspections in Wakulla, Taylor, Jefferson, and Madison Counties. Work is performed under the supervision of the Environmental Manager-SES. A valid Florida Driver’s License is required for travel. Uses knowledge of quality improvement (QI) methods and processes to work with other staff to help identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of quality within DOH Wakulla; assists in improvement projects, as assigned.

  • Responsible for functions within the Mosquito Control Program which includes, but is not limited to, planning expenses, monthly/yearly reports, community outreach, inventory, purchasing of materials, equipment maintenance, specimen collection and surveillance, spraying of pesticides. Maintains mosquito control request website and runs progress reports as required. Educates staff on State Regulations and various techniques of applying larvicides and adulticides for the reduction of mosquitoes. Identifies problem areas in the county and proactively establishes protocol to minimize breeding. Establishes working relationships with community partners and advertises services through community resources and community events. Follows regulations set forth by Chapter: 388, F.S. Chapter 5E-13, Florida Administrative Code.

  • Responsible for assisting with facility inspections and regulation of programs including but not limited to, tattoo, tanning, biomedical waste, body piercing, and swimming pools. Maintains records in the EH database and organization of in-house files. Assists in the preparation of reports, legal notices, and/or enforcement proceedings. Assists with receiving and follow-up of Rabies Program. Assists clients with education and inquiries pertaining to associated programs. Attends required trainings and education.

  • Responsible for assisting in the inspection and regulation of the Limited Use water program, beach water sampling, multi-family water systems and private well water systems. Investigates nuisance complaints in a timely manner. Assists in the preparation of reports, legal notices, and/or enforcement proceedings and participates in community and interagency meetings as needed. Maintains records in the EH database.

  • Assists with tracking and maintaining Wakulla CHD’s vehicle maintenance which includes but is not limited to initiating routine inspections, oil changes, wipers, repairs, and cleaning schedules. Serves as Logistics Coordinator in the event of an emergency. Participates in readiness activities as required.

  • Other duties as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Regulations set forth by Chapter 388, Florida Statutes and Chapter 5E-13, Florida Administrative Code

  • Ability to carry heavy equipment for a long period of time; Ability to throw a long distance; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to work independently

  • Knowledge and ability to fix basic mechanical equipment; Knowledge of safety precautions when using pesticides; Knowledgeable in usage of PCard and Aruba on Demand (AOD); Knowledge of basic arithmetic.

  • Requires technical knowledge of Environmental Health program requirements; Tattoo, Tanning, Biomedical Waste, Body Piercing, Healthy Beaches, Well Water, Sanitary Nuisance, etc.

  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

    Qualifications:

    Minimum - Valid Florida Driver's License, Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, Ability to work outdoors in extreme environmental conditions, Strong communication and customer service skills required.

    Preferred - 1-3 years of experience inspecting and regulating public health/environmental facilities, 1-3 years of experience collecting and reviewing applications from the public for permitting processes, Knowledge of basic mechanics, 1-3 years of knowledge and experience with safety precautions handling pesticides

    Some work will be performed in Jefferson, Madison and Taylor County as assigned. A work vehicle is provided for travel to surrounding counties and inspections.
