Summary This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), Office of Regulatory Science (ORS). The Chemist (Advanced Analyst) incumbent serves as an analytical instrumentation specialist within the ORS Laboratory where s/he is recognized as the expert, technical authority, and resource person in this specialization. Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be authorized up to $10,000.00. Responsibilities Serves as a technical expert and scientific advisor in the specialty area of chemistry instrumentation. Formulates and conducts research that evaluates new chemistry instrumentation and its applicability to the required analyses. Acts as a technical advisor in evaluating the propriety and scientific sufficiency of the quality controls used in the regulated industry or a laboratory performing work on a contract. Organizes and presents seminars and trainings sessions on specialized chemistry instrumentation and technical areas specifically related to analytical methods and research. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications The position of Chemist falls under the 1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 07/03/2024. Basic Requirements A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must possess 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12, in the Federal Service which includes: experience compiling and analyzing test information to determine chemistry instrumentation operating efficiency or to diagnose malfunctions; developing new or advanced analytical methods and processes related to chemistry instrumentation; and organizing and presenting seminars or training sessions on specialized chemistry instrumentation and technical areas specifically related to analytical methods and research.
