R1 RCM Director of Revenue Cycle Process Improvement (Physician RCM) in Detroit, Michigan

As our Director of Revenue Cycle Process Improvement (Physician RCM), you will support the Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) team in optimizing workflows, reducing backlogs, and solving operational challenges. Every day you will focus on process improvement, workflow standardization, SOP documentation, and cross-functional problem-solving, particularly in physician revenue cycle operations (coding, billing and collections workflows). To thrive in this role, you will be a data-driven leader with deep expertise in revenue cycle operations, healthcare billing systems, and process automation, with a strong ability to identify inefficiencies and implement scalable solutions.

Here’s what you will experience working as a Director of Revenue Cycle Process Improvement:

Process Improvement & Optimization

  • Lead process mapping and optimization initiatives for physician revenue cycle processes, and drive to best practices across disparate teams.

  • Identify root causes of billing and collections inefficiencies and implement structured improvements to enhance clean claims rate, collections rate, and denial management.

  • Reduce collections backlog by implementing streamlined workflows, automation, and improved tracking mechanisms.

  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for revenue cycle processes to ensure best practices and compliance.

  • Analyze data to track key metrics like claim denials, collections, and bad debt, and create reports to identify trends and inform decision-making.

  • Develop a process or implement a tool for information sharing across teams to drive standardization & data availability

Problem Solving & System Optimization

  • Serve as a strategic problem-solver, working closely with RCM leadership to identify, prioritize, and address key operational challenges.

  • Oversee and drive issue identification and resolution from transition of work from customers to R1 staff

  • Partner with client and vendor teams to enhance system configurations, resolve integration issues, and implement automation opportunities for improved billing accuracy and efficiency.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Act as a key liaison across RCM operations team and customer-facing teams to drive improvements and include key stakeholders.

  • Train and mentor revenue cycle staff on best practices, new workflows, and system enhancements.

  • Lead weekly status meetings on revenue cycle improvement projects and quantification of the impact of these.

Required Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience in Revenue Cycle Management, Process Improvement, or Healthcare Billing Operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Strong background in billing/collections workflows.

  • Expertise in billing system optimization, with experience in Athena, Epic, or similar RCM platforms preferred.

  • Proven ability to reduce denials, improve collections, and streamline revenue cycle workflows using data-driven methodologies.

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to leverage data and KPIs to drive operational improvements.

  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to lead and influence teams in a fast-paced, growth-stage healthcare environment.

For this US-based position, the base pay range is $109,118.00 - $187,269.24 per year . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

This job is eligible to participate in our annual bonus plan at a target of 20.00%
