This permanent position is for a Controller who will work in the East Lansing, Michigan region. In this role, it will be critical for you to plan and direct all accounting operational functions, handle the accumulation and consolidation of financial data for internal and external financial statements, evaluate accounting and internal control systems, and lead departmental staff. This role's duties will require effectively managing self and others within strict time constraints when providing client services, leading while also being a team player, generating innovative ideas, and challenging the status quo. Your responsibilities

  • Check deliverables of self and team to certify they meet client expectations

  • Manage the creation of the annual budget and forecasts and monitor them on a monthly basis

  • Evaluate, implement and streamline policies, procedures, controls and most methodologies

  • Manage finance department operations, including accounts payable, billings & collections, and payroll

  • Handle daily cash management and produce cash-flow reports, calculating cash needs at weekly and monthly intervals

  • Perform duties beyond formal job responsibilities

  • Responsible for month-end and year-end close of income statement and balance sheet, account reconciliations & G/L analysis

  • Give financial reports to executive committee and partners each month

  • Collaborate with executive team and partners to make efficient and effective firm-wide operation possible

  • Advance Finance Department initiatives, such as software and systems implementation and other departmental or firm-wide improvements, as needed, with research, planning and implementation

  • Manage the timing for monthly billing and other cash management techniques to make sure cash collection is on time Requirements - Takes action on items beyond formal job responsibilities

  • Advanced credentials such as a Masters of Business Administration / MBA or Certified Public Accountant / CPA are preferred

  • Ability and willingness to meet business critical deadlines

  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills

  • Outstanding technology, analytics and management experience required

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively throughout all levels of the company

  • Comfortable working in a changing and dynamic environment

  • Progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller preferred

  • Demonstrated knowledge of general ledger

  • Adeptness in Prepare Trial Balance

  • Budget administration experience required

  • Income Statements experience highly preferred

  • Foundational knowledge in Accounts Payable (AP)

  • General familiarity with General Journal

  • Strong familiarity with financial statement preparation

  • Practical knowledge of Balance Sheet Account Reconciliation

  • Solid understanding of Annual Operating Budget

  • Accounts Receivable (AR) experience highly desired

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or other business related field

  • High attention to detail

  • Earlier experience in public accounting is highly valued

  • Skilled in the construction and delivery of effective presentations to audiences with wide-ranging backgrounds
