Position Summary

The College of Music at Michigan State University seeks an experienced early childhood music researcher. This full-time, fixed-term appointment (1 year) will begin August 1, 2024. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Karen Salvador to kick off the Val's Kids Project, which is a 5-year project investigating early childhood music teaching and learning at our community music schools (and affiliated programs) in East Lansing and Detroit. Data the fellow collects would belong to the Val's Kids project to facilitate ongoing/longitudinal work. However, the associate will participate in analysis, writing, and dissemination, and will be credited as an author on work they contribute to substantially (first author if their writing contribution merits this). In addition, the research associate will be credited as a contributor anytime data they collected was utilized in a publication or presentation, even after their appointment at MSU has ended. Applicants should be aware that this fellowship will require a flexible schedule, including some evenings or Saturdays. The research associate will likely observe in early childhood music classes, which happen at times throughout weekdays including evenings and on Saturdays. Data collection activities such as interviews would also be scheduled at mutually convenient times with participants, so those might be evenings or Saturdays. Some work is possible remotely, but the research associate will spend significant time at MSU's Community Music School locations in East Lansing and Detroit, and in classes in the surrounding communities. Additional responsibilities may include meetings with stakeholders in each location as well as meetings on campus with Dr. Salvador.
