Job Summary:

Caterpillar’s Advanced Materials Technology (AMT) division has responsibility for Caterpillar wrought steel specifications and quality for the global procurement of wrought steel products. AMT is currently seeking an experienced metallurgical or materials engineer to deliver world-class support to our business unit customers. In this role you will lead Caterpillar’s Steel Mill Assessment team to develop high quality suppliers for producing and processing of wrought steel product. The supplier assessment team provides troubleshooting, design support, and guidance for business units to meet quality, velocity, and cost requirements. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in Steelmaking and processing, application of Caterpillar Steel specifications, and APQP.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead global steel mill assessment process, including budgeting, planning, tracking, and corrective actions.

  • Plan and manage audits, including funding requests, prioritization, and oversight for teams in North and South America, Asia and Europe.

  • Conduct 20-30 domestic and international assessments annually.

  • Track audit completion, distribute reports, and maintain audit data for communication to client business units

  • Train and qualify new auditors; maintain audit processes and materials.

  • Solve high-impact metallurgical problems and lead corrective actions.

  • Participate in APQP, New Supplier Introduction, and New Product Introduction processes for various business units.

  • Provide technical support and training to design engineers, manufacturing, quality and procurement personnel, and Caterpillar suppliers

  • Responsible for Caterpillar Steel Quality specifications.

  • Lead global Steel Improvement Team.

Education Requirement:

• Requires a degree in an accredited Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science curriculum.

• Uses advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.

Top Candidates will also have

• 10 years’ experience in wrought steel making, failure analysis, metallurgical support to design engineering.

• Previous experience from within the steel industry or foundry melting operation.

• An understanding of ingot and continuous casting processes

• Basic knowledge of wrought steel processing (for example hot rolling of flat & long product, manufacturing of tubular product).

• Basic knowledge of external certification and compliance (for example RoHS and CBAM)

• Strong manufacturing engineering experience and understanding of PFMEA, APQP, PPAP & Control plans

• Demonstrated experience of the application of wrought steels

• Ability to understand both technology and business domains

• Good written and oral communication skills

• Experience supporting multi-functional teams for the validation and procurement of steel from qualified suppliers.

• Thorough knowledge of related steelmaking processes

• Experience leading diverse teams

Additional Information

• Locations for this position include East Peoria, IL and Mossville, IL.

• Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.

• This position may require up to 30% travel.

Summary Pay Range:

$144,960.00 - $217,320.00
