Washington High School
The 12-month Caterpillar Student Trainee Program is designed to provide high school students with a career opportunity to build their work skills in preparation for a long-term manufacturing and at Caterpillar. Selected students will participate in a multi-phase program that includes both technical and nontechnical skills needed for full-time employment in the welding & manufacturing trades field upon high school graduation.
Our specialist will perform a series of routing functions to assemble machine components . Assembles, tests, diagnoses malfunction and performs adjustment and repair of prime products and major units such as powershift and marine transmissions, winches, fuel injection systems, etc., which have been found defective by test and inspection. Inspects units and/or assemblies as necessary to determine malfunctions. Assembles, dynamometer tests and repairs torque converters. Assembles final drives, pipelayer draw works, direct drive transmissions and units required for special attachments or parts usage. Performs assembly work in sub-assembly areas directly associated with prime product assembly lines. May operate remote radio-controlled crane or specially equipped vehicles to transport prime products such as track type tractors, etc.
Through classroom and hands-on learning, participants will become proficient in various assembly & manufacturing techniques while receiving high school credit and earning a paid $15.00 hourly wage from Caterpillar as follows:
Phase I: Summer internship weld lab training (32 hours maximum)
Phase II: Fall Semester Co-Op - For High School course credit (15 minimum - 20 hours max)
Phase III: Spring Semester Co-Op - For High School course credit (15 minimum - 20 hours max)
Job Duties
Assembling / testing, reworking and repairing machine components
Performing production based on schedule and continuously improving process efficiency
Ensuring adherence to Standard Work Sheet to achieve quality products and avoid quality issues
Participating in pre-shift Process Improvement Dialogue (PID) & Continuous Improvement (CI), raising, submitting issues and suggestions, and following up requirements from supervisor
Providing timely reports to operation supervisor or team lead on material availability and equipment downtime
Identifying specification gaps and root causes and making adjustments to meet engineering test specifications
Required Personal Protective Equipment: hearing protection, safety glasses, steel toed/metatarsal foot gear, and protective clothing and equipment including shock resistant gloves, fall restraint harnesses, jackets, chaps, helmet, grinding shield, cut/heat resistant sleeves, etc.
Basic computer skills to access Cat Intranet and SAP program
Basic Qualifications
Must be a current high school Junior attending Washington High School. (rising Senior in Fall 2025)
Must provide letter of recommendation from school official.
Students must have minimum 2.8 GPA. (documentation required)
Must be at least 16 years of age with parental consent.
Must be enrolled in high school manufacturing or vocational course.
Must have reliable transportation and adhere to safety and attendance policy guidelines.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to follow all safety guidelines including the use of all PPE
Ability to follow documented procedures for standard work, to perform work safely and free of defects
Physical requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):
Willing and able to sit or stand for prolonged periods
Willing and able to perform repetitive assembly operations
Willing and able to lift up to 25 lbs. (required EHS safety training provided)
Noise levels of 85db or greater
Operate overhead cranes, jib cranes and hoists (18 years of age restriction)
Lift up to 35 lbs frequently
Work at multiple heights
Climb on equipment, machines, ladders & various step stools
Work in environment with frequently changing temperatures and all-weather conditions
Exposure to magnets that may impact medical devices
Kneel, squat, and crawl on knees
Work in awkward positions, including forward reach, lateral reach, squat, overhead reaching, twisting and forward head and rotation of neck.
Work in tight spaces
Repetitive grasping, pushing, pulling, rotating
Use of fine motor skills
Use of hand tools
Ability to read prints and use gauges for Quality Inspection Qualification
Additional Information
This position is open to Washington High School (rising Seniors) who are in the vocational career program
These are part time, temporary positions, with maximum of 32 hours
Compensation Pay rate is $15.00 hr
The location for this position (on-site) is Bldg. SS in East Peoria IL
Must be able to work 1st shift - working hours may change with business needs
Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Summary Pay Range:
$15.00 - $17.50
