The Research Foundation for The State University of New York at Stony Brook Dietician/Nutritionist I in East Setauket, New York

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nutrition or related field. Experience with Nutrition Counseling.
Preferred Qualifications:
Registered Dietitian. One (1) year of full-time experience with Nutrition Counseling. WIC experience. Completion of a Dietetic Internship approved by the American Dietetic Association. Brief Description of Duties:
The Dietitian/Nutritionist I will be providing nutrition support to the WIC Program. The successful incumbent should have the ability to work independently under pressure, handling customer related issues as needed. Travel to other WIC sites when required. The successful incumbent will have the ability to communicate with staff, families, children and the general public. This position will be primarily in our BayShore clinic but will require travel to our other sites located in Farmingville, East Setauket and Hauppauge. The incumbent will also attend mandatory NYSDOH training on Long Island and within NY State.Duties:

  • Provide participant centered care to all WIC participants.
  • Conduct individual nutrition and breastfeeding assessments and counseling sessions responsive to needs/interests of patients.
  • Lead facilitated group discussions on various topics related to the needs of WIC participants.
  • Refer participants to other health care providers, social services, and community programs.
  • Document all contacts and referrals in the WIC management information system.
  • Assist staff with answering phones.
  • Enroll, certify and recertify WIC eligible applicants on the WIC Statewide Management Information System according to Federal and NYS Department of Health WIC Program.
  • Screen all women applicants for cigarette smoking, alcohol, drugs, and other substance abuse.
  • Screen participants at certification for High Risk status.
  • Review and evaluate participant's referral and medical documentation forms.
  • Conduct Hematological testing with finger stick instrument and a bloodless instrument on required participants.
  • Conduct Anthropometric measures which include using an infant scale, adult scale, length board and stadiometer.
  • Handle participant complaints in a professional manner. Seek out assistance from an appropriate staff member when needed.
  • Prescribe food packages to participants being certified. Tailor and authorize the WIC food package to certified participants.
  • Precept dietetic interns from the Department of Family Medicine @ SUNY Stony Brooks Dietetic Internship Program.
  • Work with Stony Brook Medicine residents and medical students to educate them about the WIC Program.
  • Conduct local outreach and public health detailing to local physician offices and community agencies to promote the WIC Program.
  • Update the WIC Statewide Management Information System. Print WIC Program reports as needed.
  • Stay current on WIC policies and procedures, memos, communique's.
  • Attend all mandatory training as assigned by the NYSDOH(see travel requirements) and WIC director. Complete mandatory onsite training and annual training.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, families, children, and the public.
  • Other duties as assigned.
