The clinical Education Specialist (MSN) is a leader in assessing, designing, implementing and evaluating educational programs and projects that support and improve the provision of quality, cost effective and compassionate patient care in the assigned units (periop, Medsurg, Critical Care, and ED).

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses, designs, facilitates, implements and evaluates educational programs and projects, to support the network goals and objectives. Provides clinical support and mentorship for hospital staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates expertise in the teaching/learning process to improve clinical practice and system processes.

  • Facilitates continuing education programs to support instructional goals and objectives of the patient care services division

  • Administers, supervises and provides classroom and clinical experiences to support orientation of new personnel.

  • Assists unit leadership with the coordination, scheduling and evaluation of unit-based orientation for new employees.

  • Assures compliance with orientation policies and procedures.

  • Assesses learning needs of staff and provides appropriate opportunities to enhance ongoing education.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of practice related competencies.

  • Mentors, teaches and supports staff during new clinical procedures.

  • Demonstrates ability in the teaching/learning process to improve clinical practice.

  • Demonstrates expertise in areas of clinical practice, by participating with staff in the clinical arena to identify opportunities for improvement, assess staff performance, and facilitate implementation of new practices.

  • Maintains current clinical competence.

  • Seeks information related to advances in clinical practice.

  • Assists with the development of nursing staff.

  • Collaborates with patient, family, and health care professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Responds to staff and physician inquiries, questions and concerns.

  • Contributes to the development and change of the health care delivery system by facilitating innovations in practice, education, research and technology.

  • Participates in collaborative activities to promote organizational development.

  • Participates in the Quality Improvement process and facilitates integration of outcomes.

  • Maintains appropriate records.

  • Functions as a project leader, consultant, and mentor.

  • Supports the Network Philosophy of Nursing.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 4 hours per day; 2 hours at a time. Stand for up to 6 hours per day; 3 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 20 minutes at a time. Frequently use hands and fingers. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 50 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed, and/or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION: Valid RN license issued by state in which working (NJ/PA); MSN preferred. BLS/ACLS required. Advanced certifications (CCRN/CEN/Trauma preferred)

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Two to five years recent clinical experience in critical care/progressive care, and/or ED settings preferred. Demonstrated success as a nurse preceptor. Previous experience in the education specialist role/nursing education preferred. Trauma Experience preferred.
