Experienced, visionary leader to serve as Director of UTRGV ARTS . Responsible for the management and daily operations of all college public events, performances, and exhibitions at UTRGV art venues.
Description of Duties
Responsible for overseeing the daily operations, of the UTRGV art venues, including the Distinguished Artist Series, FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts), faculty and student performances of the School of Music, Department of Theatre, and Department of Dance, faculty and student exhibitions of the School of Art and Design, and faculty and student public events hosted by the Department of Creative Writing.
Develops visionary and sustainable plans for the UTRGV ARTS season that align with the mission of the College of Fine Arts each academic year.
Oversees and approves spending of university-allocated funds.
Creates a budget for the performing arts series that includes show costs and projected income from ticket revenue, annual member donations, and sponsorship.
Monitors budgets throughout the year.
In collaboration with the office of grants and contracts, seeks grant funding in support of UTRGV ARTS . and writes grants for specific programs or projects as needed.
Works with UTRGV ARTS Marketing and Box Office associate as well as the University Marketing and Communications team to develop, plan, and execute initiatives for the UTRGV ARTS , performing arts series, fundraising activities, and other campaigns.
Manages event promotion as well as broader brand promotion.
In collaboration with UTRGV ARTS Marketing and Box Office Associate, employs traditional techniques to connect to ticket buyers and creates innovative media strategies to expand its audience, enhance membership, box office and volunteer efforts. Addresses the guest experience.
Represents the College of Fine Arts and UTRGV in a positive manner to the entertainment and arts community, businesses, colleges, and other agencies. Speaks at civic organizations and clubs and serves on arts and culture boards as necessary.
Curates performances for the annual presenting season, including identifying and negotiating contracts for performing artists.
Coordinates the negotiation of deals with agents and recommends language for the development of artist contracts in collaboration with the institution contracts office.
Works with technical and production staff to ensure all schedules, budgets, and technical requirements are appropriate.
Attends booking conferences and collaborates with other performing arts centers to block book.
Evaluates touring shows for quality, variety, and affordability. Surveys audiences for show preferences and consults with the UTRGV ARTS Distinguished Artist Series Subcommittee.
Works collaboratively with the Department Heads in the College of Fine Arts to produce and advertise shows and public events.
Performs personnel administrative functions (e.g. hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, providing professional development opportunities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and ensuring department/program outcomes are achieved.
Leads the College of Fine Arts Faculty Collaboration Committee in planning FESTIBA and participates in other committees, professional training, industry conferences, and conventions.
Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Business field from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Master’s degree from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
Five (5) years of experience as an artist or arts administrator and budget management, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience
Supervisory, budget, and artist contracting experience.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with diverse populations. Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Must have ability to work under pressure, solve problems, and negotiate. Ability to strategically plan, including aligning budgetary decisions to strategic plans. Ability to manage people and form collaborative teams. Ability to assess artistic quality to curate a fine arts season.
The City of Edinburg’s Cultural Arts Department has a long-standing partnership with the UTRGV College of Fine Arts, including co-producing public events. To enhance the partnership and leverage the UTRGV Distinguished Artist Series, the City of Edinburg may contract the selected candidate to curate and contract music artists for their Concert Series. If aligned with the City’s music vision, the City of Edinburg Cultural Arts Department will offer a consultation fee to enhance the UTRGV ARTS Director’s salary.
