Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Crew Management Centre (CMC) is responsible for the management of CN’s train crews across Canada. The role oversees crews running trains coast to coast and handles timekeepers who validate all crew hours, train activity trends, and vacancies. The role handles scheduling for all employees by following specific clauses across multiple collective agreements in Canada.

Main Responsibilities

Regulatory and Reputational Risk

· Establish a cohesive working relationship with union leaders to facilitate changes in the collective agreements and establish parameters for emergencies

· Keep thorough tracking of time grievances and disagreements between crew management

· Understand 6 to 7 different collective agreement clauses as they relate to crew management and 15 to 20 short line agreements

Technology, Automation, and Analytics

· Plan ahead for disruptions by forecasting the number of crews that could be required for the smooth functioning of trains across the CN network

· Compose the number of crews needed by analyzing historical train activities and trends

Cost Efficiencies

· Calculate and ensure that labour costs do not have a significant impact on CN when creating pools and spare boards

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular work week from Sunday to Thursday or Tuesday to Saturday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines handle pressure and stress. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The role requires minimal travel (5%) within Canada.

Experience

Management

· Minimum 10 years of experience working at CN (previous experiences as Dispatcher, Manager, Rail Traffic Controller or Conductor)

o Experience with CN’s collective agreements and operations

o Experience in finance and forecasting

o Some experience in predictive analytics*

Education/Certification/Designation

· High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

· Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation-related discipline*

· Bachelor’s Degree in Management or equivalent managerial experience*

· Knowledge of regulations pertaining to Transportation employees

· Knowledge of Service Reliability System (SRS), Crew Assignment and Timekeeping System(CATS), Train Operation Planning and Control (TOPC), and Right Time Business Intelligence (RTBI)

· Knowledge of Freight Rail Crew Optimization Scheduling and the Fatigue Management Program

· Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access)

· Fluently bilingual both written and verbal (English, French)*
