A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN INDIRECT LENDING UNDERWRITER

This position is responsible for receiving, reviewing, and decisioning applications for the Indirect Lending department. These include applications for auto loans, RV loans, credit card, overdraft account loans, and signature loans. Assist in retaining and developing relationships with dealerships. Assembles and underwrites loan applications and approves those that meet initial lending criteria and are within approved lending limits. Presents loan requests that are above lending limit to the manager for higher-limit approval. Ensures that members/dealerships and prospective members/dealerships are promptly and professionally served. Provides general Credit Union information as requested. High volume department that includes Indirect Lending, Student Lending, and Retail Lending.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Assumes responsibility for effectively receiving, reviewing, and decisioning loan applications.

  • Evaluates and verifies loan applications and credit criteria. Computes debt ratios. Approves loans within limits of authority, and ensures safe lending through detection of fraud or other red flags. Requests additional information if required.

  • Underwrites loans and ensures that each loan is promptly and properly prepared, documented, processed, approved, funded, and issues adverse action notices.

  • Assists in servicing loans by processing such items as payoff, refinances, problem loan workout arrangements, address changes, payment extensions, collateral releases, and payment due date changes.

  • Audits loan files.

  • Ensures that lending operations are conducted in accordance with established Credit Union policies and are legally compliant. Ensures that loan requests are properly documented.

  • Able to be adaptable to changes in lending underwriting.

Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective and professional business relationships with members and dealerships.

  • Resolves requests and questions promptly and courteously.

  • Communicates with stakeholders via phone, fax, or email concerning approved, pending, or denied loans.

  • Keeps dealers/members properly informed of Credit Union loan policies and services.

  • Ensures that the Credit Union's quality and professional reputation is projected and maintained.

  • Counsels members regarding money management and financial matters. Assists in counseling members whose loan requests were denied, explaining reasons and alternatives.

  • Communicates effectively with dealerships and assist in retaining and developing relationships with dealerships.

Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective coordination and communication with area personnel and with management.

  • Assists area personnel as needed. Assists other Loan Underwriters.

  • Assists in training.

  • Completes reports and records promptly and accurately.

  • Attends meetings as required.

  • Keeps Management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.

  • Provides outstanding service internally and externally as defined by the credit union service promises.

Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

  • Actively and professionally cross-sells Credit Union services.

  • Stays informed regarding local and national economic conditions and legal and regulatory changes.

  • Ensures proper maintenance, cleanliness, and security of work area, desks, equipment, etc.

  • Takes all necessary tests and quizzes required by Credit Union

  • Performs duties when needed with Student Lending Program

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

  • Lending functions are effectively performed in accordance with established Credit Union policies and with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Good business relations exist with members and dealers. Programs and services are properly and thoroughly explained and members' needs accurately assessed.

  • Required reports are accurate and timely.

  • Good working relationships exist with area personnel and with management. Area personnel are assisted as needed.

  • Credit applications and related financial data are closely and effectively analyzed and evaluated.

  • Personal delinquency write-off numbers are in line with Credit Union objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

High school graduate with required loan training and certification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of Credit Union loan services, policies, and procedures.

  • Understanding of related legal and regulatory standards, and required loan documentation.

  • Knowledge of consumer lending practices.

  • Understanding of the foundation of determining credit worthiness. Knowledge of Credit Union loan policies, products, procedures, processing, and underwriting guideline

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Minimum one-year related experience

  • Lending/Underwriting experience strongly preferred

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Excellent interviewing, communication, and public relations skills. Professional appearance and attitude.

  • Strong analytical and financial skills.

  • Strong work ethic and the ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to operate related computer applications, and other business equipment including calculators, printer, and telephone.

  • Good typing skills.

WORK SCHEDULE FOR AN NDIRECT LENDING UNDERWRITER

This full-time position offers a shift of: Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM and some Saturdays on a rotating schedule from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Rotating shift from 10:00AM to 7:00 PM and some Holidays required. You would always have your Saturday evenings and all-day Sunday free!
