Katmai Biomechanical Research Engineer I in Fort Rucker, Alabama

SUMMARY

Provide biomechanical engineering research in support of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation Support Services (RDTESS)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise the Principal Investigator and support staff in administration and execution of protocols.

  • Perform as an Associate Investigator in laboratory procedures, testing, research activities, and other scientific and administrative tasks in fields such as aerospace, electrical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering, biomechanics or other related field.

  • Use principles of and integrate aspects of scientific, engineering, and medical fields to accomplish project goals.

  • Provide support with developing testing procedures and data collection necessary to execute project goals and manage and develop methodology, projects, personnel, and resources.

  • Assist with acquiring, analyzing, and evaluating data gathered during research and assuring accurate and complete documentation of protocol execution.

  • Provide support with preparing protocol interim and final reports, presentations, papers, and other documentation on research progress and findings.

  • Rely on instructions and guidelines to perform the functions of the job, including, but not limited to, relevant standard operating procedures, national standards of research technical accuracy, and/or other written guidelines provided.

  • Provide services related to the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E efforts, including the development of draft analysis plans and protocol documentation from literature and data reviews along with the collection and preparation of data for analysis and synthesis according to policy and procedures of the USAARL.

  • Provide engineering services by developing and writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will ensure scientific and sound engineering principles and safety procedures are implemented and followed per USAARL and MRMC approval process and existing policies.

  • Record all laboratory procedures, research project data, and results in government- authorized notebooks and electronic systems in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree from an ABET accredited program in engineering related field such as aerospace, electrical, biomedical, mechanical, biomechanics, physics, etc.

  • Must have a minimum two (2) years of experience in biomedical engineering or clinical.

  • Experience in laboratory procedures, testing and research activities.

  • Must act as a credentialed Associate Investigator (AI).

  • Must have demonstrated experience within at least four (4) of the following research tool groupings: impact and/or shock devices, biomedical imaging and imaging analysis tools (including CT, MRI, and x-rays), high speed imaging and analysis tools, biomedical instrumentation (load cells, accelerometers, etc.), data acquisition equipment, biomechanical research and testing with demonstrated injury biomechanics research; PMHS (post mortem human specimen) research and data, and/or with ATDs (Anthropomorphic Test Devices).

  • Must be able to read, understand and execute techniques and procedures within the quality standards and timelines prescribed by the research plan.

  • Must have experience in programming, data acquisition, instrumentation, kinematic and video motion capture, and use of MATLAB.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Exposure to Postmortem Human Subjects (PMHS) research and Biosafety Laboratory Level 2 policies and procedures.

  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and initiatives at one time.

  • Strong written communication skills and a solid understanding of Government contracting and the professional services industry.

  • Expert computer skills with advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite software.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.

  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality.

  • Proven ability to exercise mature judgment – specifically in recognizing and respecting the confidential nature of corporate and personnel matters.

Job Requirements:

WORK SCHEDULE

Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.

TRAVEL

May travel CONUS or O-CONUS to conduct RDT&E (data collections), attend working groups meetings, training, workshops, conferences, or other relevant meetings. Expect multiple data collections per year. The expected travel time is less than 25%.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the company’s automobile insurance policy. Driving, with or without accommodation, may be required when traveling for training and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 15%.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in an office and /or laboratory setting. Laboratory environment includes human testing, so exposure may include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals, fumes, vapors, communicable diseases, etc. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities. On written authority of the Laboratory Commander, fly on military aircraft or ride in military vehicles in the official conduct of duties of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, lying down or to be or remain in a position or state of inactivity. Lift and carry 50 lbs. individually and as a part of a team lift and carry operation; use hand tools to assemble and disassemble equipment, instrumentation, and test devices; climb and descend equipment, test devices, military vehicles, steps, or ladders.
