JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for performing a variety of support duties for OCO’s providers and other clinical staff and assists with ensuring smooth operations at the assigned health center(s). Adheres to infection control, safety guidelines and confidentiality policies as well as all agency, department and regulatory policies, procedures and regulations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains patient confidentiality and confidentiality of health center information/operations.
Responsible for providing care to patients under the supervision of OCO’s providers and Practice Manager.
Provides instruction, education and counseling to patients regarding health care related information.
Actively participate in the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process.
Clerical Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs medical receptionist duties and related work as necessary.
Obtains, verifies and updates patient information and provides support services to patients and medical staff.
Answers incoming health center calls
Assists with completion and follow-up of Family Planning Benefits Program, CHP, FHP, MMC discount fee, etc.
Provides information on community resources to patients.
Assists in making referrals, authorizations and completing necessary paperwork.
Duplicates documents and forms as directed and assists in established office systems.
Prepares and maintains detailed records, files, reports and other correspondence.
Types meeting minutes, referral letters, speeches, letters and other correspondence for administrative staff and providers as assigned; assist with preparation of agendas, materials, notes, etc.
Functions as a member of the business team, providing front desk and business area tasks by being cross-trained.
Enhances professional growth and development through conferences, education programs, etc.
Attends required meetings, participates in committees as requested.
Completes annual In-Service and NYSDOH mandatory trainings by due dates.
Clinical Duties:
Handles initial screening and triage of patients, both in person and over the phone.
Rooms patients; interviews them for general condition and presenting reason for visit; takes and records patient history and vital signs.
Collects specimens from patients including venipuncture, performs testing of routine specimens.
Provides counseling and education for all contraception, and treatment counseling for STD’s.
Assists provider with examinations, diagnostic and other procedures such as Nexplanon, IUD placement, colposcopy and biopsies.
Receives labs/testing results performed outside the center, documents accordingly and provides results to patients as directed by OCO medical staff.
Follows instructions provided by OCO’s medical staff.
Handles follow-up and referral tasks according to Health Center protocols and provider direction.
Documents all activities/interventions, patient responses, medication dispensed and/or prescribed, etc. in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Maintains well stocked medical & operational supplies; keeping environment and equipment clean and sterile.
Attends required meetings, professional conferences/seminars to maintain clinical skills/enhancement of knowledge base of treatment methods, pap smear guidelines, etc.
Completes annual In-Service and NYSDOH Mandatory trainings by due dates.
Passes competency testing annually, basic life support certification and becomes HIV counseling certified if applicable.
Assists with special tasks as needed and emergency situations as stipulated in Department and Agency guidelines.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Must have general healthcare knowledge; basic nursing principals, protocols and medical terminology.
Must have knowledge of electronic medical record and paper reporting/recording and filing.
Must maintain high degree of confidentiality, exhibit professionalism, good judgement and flexibility.
Must have the ability to work with a large cross-section of patients in a warm, non-judgmental, objective manner.
Must be able to deal effectively with the public and handle a stressful, fast paced environment.
Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions and possess excellent communication skills.
Must be familiar with program/agency and regulatory policies and procedures, including infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality, etc.
Must have knowledge of public services and health care related resources.
Must have the ability to work independently, with indirect supervision and/or work well with others as a team.
Must be able to type and/or edit approximately 60 words per minute with accuracy.
Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License with driving background within OCO policy and a reliable, insured vehicle. Must have the ability to travel between all OCO Reproductive Health locations.
Must have the ability to proficiently operate a computer, tablet, copier and other office equipment.
Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, and physically assisting patients.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Post High School Education/Training in Medical Assistant Program; or
Graduate of NYS Medical Assistant Program; and
1-3 years’ work experience as a Medical Assistant
