National Park Service Motor Vehicle Operator in Gunnison, Colorado

Summary The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a motor vehicle operator for large trucks and equipment in support of operation and maintenance activities at Curecanti National Recreation Area and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The position is located in the Facility Management Division and is directly supervised by the Roads/Trails/Marinas Supervisor. Responsibilities The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a motor vehicle operator for large trucks and equipment in support of operation and maintenance activities at Curecanti National Recreation Area and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The position is located in the Facility Management Division and is directly supervised by the Roads/Trails/Marinas Supervisor. The incumbent will serve as the primary driver/operator of the park's tandem axle sewer pumper truck equipped with a 3,000 gallon holding tank. The incumbent will utilize this truck to pump numerous vault toilets and septic tanks at both park units and will transport waste for final disposal at the park's sewage lagoon. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for performing as the primary operator of the park's front load trash truck to empty dumpsters at both parks and transport waste to the local landfill facility. Other responsibilities will include performing as a member of the park Road crew and include brushing, mowing and surface maintenance and repairs of both paved and unpaved roads as well as conducting snow removal activities on park roads and parking areas. Tasks are performed with minimal supervision. Duties require complete competence and working knowledge of accepted practices of the applicable trades and crafts and equipment operation areas. The incumbent must be able to work with various large trucks up to 56,000 lbs GVWR . Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires frequent lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted and following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb truck and equipment ladders, bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -30 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or equipment. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The position requires a valid State Class A Commercial Driver's License as well as Tanker and Air Brake Endorsements. These must be issued prior to entering duty. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must possess and maintain a current Class A (or higher) Commercial Driver's License. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools. Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
