Actalent Principal Software Engineer in Hagerstown, Maryland

Position: Principal Engineer – Software - Sr. Database Developer

Overview: The Principal Engineer – Software - Sr. Database Developer will work within the Connected Solutions engineering group to design, implement and test cloud-based applications to enable enhanced levels of machine connectivity and control. The team member will play a crucial role of developing and maintaining applications which manage the consumption and egress of data within the cloud infrastructure. This role is within the Global Product Development team.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, and implement improvements and changes to existing time-series and SQL databases.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot contextualized data discrepancies.

  • Perform testing to validate database behavior and changes.

  • Plan and implement systematic test sequences.

  • Provide direction and technical counsel to lower-level developers and software engineers.

  • Research and propose the use of new software/technologies for product development.

  • Prepare technical solution design proposals and presentations.

Qualifications:

  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field with five (5) or more years of related experience.

  • Proficiency in developing SQL (e.g., SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, ADx).

  • Experience with big data tools (pySpark, Hadoop, pandas, Google Big Query, AWS DynamoDB, etc.).

  • Contextualization of ‘big data’ datasets.

  • Familiarity with timeseries databases.

  • Proficiency in C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, Go, or similar programming languages.

  • Knowledge of cloud technologies like AWS, Docker, or Azure.

  • Experience with CI/CD tools, test automation, and DevOps principles.

  • Agile design methodology experience (e.g., Jira).

Preferred Skills:

  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer, or Electrical Engineering.

  • Web-based application experience for storing and accessing complex ‘big’ data.

  • Understanding of common IoT architectures and tools.

  • System design considering cybersecurity and SecOps principles.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience with automotive or heavy-duty construction/industrial equipment data.

  • Familiarity with Azure cloud tools, including Azure Data Explorer.

  • Ability to thrive in a startup-like culture, excel in ambiguous situations, and embrace technical challenges.
