Job Title: Manual Energetics Machinist (Lathe and Mill Operator)

Department: Chemical Operations / Class-VII Machining

Reports To: Chris Adams

Responsibilities:

The machinist will be largely using manual mills and lathes to machine propellant grains to the required configuration and will also be responsible for machining explosive assemblies for production or to support FRB activities.

For tasks related to FRB investigations, this position will work closely with the cognizant Design and Manufacturing Engineers.

  • Controlling machines and processes by using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate.

  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.

  • Instruments should include but limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators, and scales.

  • Machine parts to specification using tools such as lathes, milling machines and grinders.

  • Set-up, adjust and operate all basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.

  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.

  • Inspecting hardware or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems/defects.

  • Able to analyze information, evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Assessing the value, importance, quality of parts material and or processes.

  • Stay up to date on technology and applying new knowledge to your job.

  • Program numerically controlled machine tool or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.

  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate quality products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.

  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machining work.

  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.

  • Confer with Sr Machinist regularly ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and output will meet specifications.

  • Most of the machining will be on propellant billets to manufacture gas generate grains. Propellant billets are typically considered 1.3 explosives or flammable solids. The machining of live energetic parts (including 1.1 energetic bearing articles) for failure investigations or rework operations, as well as standard production product, are required on a periodic basis.

  • Perform in-process inspection using standard measurement equipment.Accurately complete process paperwork, as required.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Additional Expectations:

  • Machine Propellant grains to procedure and or drawing utilizing a variety of standard machine ship equipment to include but not limited too knee-mill, Lathes, saws, grinders etc.

  • Program equipment and optimize machining process.

  • Receive training from onsite machining SME’s (building 102 machinist).

  • Support onboarding and training of energetics machinist.

  • Machine and tear down of energetic devices as required to support schedule and FBR activities with support and assistance from cognizant SME.

  • Perform standard work checklist activities as required by Standard Work Checklist

  • Maintain inventory control and Net Explosive weight within building 104.

  • Maintain active communication with supervisory personnel through regular one on ones, daily management communication and reaching out as appropriate throughout the day.

  • Maintain 80% or greater direct labor charges by working with equipment team for fill in work as appropriate per supervisory guidance.

  • Perform daily 5S activities as specified by Standard Work Checklist and as directed by Supervisory personnel.

Qualifications – External/internal:

  • 2-5 years of machining experience (both manual and CNC).

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Handling, installing, positioning, moving/manipulating materials.

  • Performing physical activities that require frequent activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

This position is also eligible for bonus as part of the total compensation package.

The salary range for this position (in local currency) is 58,800.00 - 109,400.00. Base pay offered may vary depending on various factors, including, but not limited to: job-related knowledge; skills; experience; and other eligibility factors such as geographic location.
