The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) is one of the largest of its kind in the country, with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population. The department serves three integrated functions: teaching undergraduate and graduate students, researching problems in biology and the environment, and carrying out public outreach to help society implement new knowledge.

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) values science and education grounded in the natural history of organisms, andstriveto understand the patterns and processes that structure communities and ecosystems, and drive evolutionary change over all geographical and time scales. As new methodsprovideinsight into ecological and evolutionary mechanism and function, we seek to refine fundamental concepts, integrate findings into novel theory, andaddressenvironmental challenges.

The Postdoctoral Associate will be supervised by Peter Hess (BEE) and Christine Goodale (EEB)

Position Function

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join our project team using a model-experiment (ModEx) approach to explore the exciting prospect that significant dormant-season plant nitrogen (N) uptake occurs in northern forests. The postdoc will work with our project team to interpret and model field measurements of 15N tracer studies of cold-season N uptake at two experimental sites and explore the significance of cold-season uptake in altering the coupled carbon-nitrogen (C-N) cycle under a future climate.

Anticipated Division of Time

• Develop models and conduct and analyze model simulations of field measurements of cold season N plant uptake (40%).
• Analyze the impact of cold season N uptake on the coupled C-N cycle in the current and future climates. (30%).
• Actively publish in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences (25%).
• Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students (5%)

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to climate/ecosystem modeling(e.g. physics, mathematics, atmospheric science, ecology, engineering).
• Proficient programming skills in at least one major scientific computing language (e.g. Fortran, Python, Julia, C++, etc.).
• Strong quantitative and data analysis skills.
• Willingness and ability to assume a leadership role in and conduct research as part of a larger team.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience and proficiency with model formulation and simulations in state-of-the-art Earth System Models.
• Experience with model formulations of the C-N cycle.

Supervision Exercised:

• None.

This position is full-time and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with a possible extension depending on funding and performance.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

• Prior relevant work or industry experience.

• Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.

• Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
