Research Associate--Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University is searching for a research associate in the area of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Spectroscopy and Protein Biophysics.

This Research Associate position involves primary research and related professional activities associated with a research project on the application of Electron Spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to the study of radical states and molecular dynamics in proteins.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Conduct original spectroscopic and biochemical research on proteins involved in sensing light and/or redox state in the circadian clock or bacterial chemotaxis systems. Coordinate pulsed ESR spectroscopy experiments on a variety of systems and conduct experiments and training within Cornell's ACERT ESR center. Assist PI in teaching new students, analyzing data, and writing manuscripts for publication of technical articles in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at professional meetings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research (90%) In collaboration with the PI, use expertise with pulsed ESR experiments and their application on the study of flavin-containing proteins or spin-labeled proteins. The Research Associate will be required to produce cofactor containing and spin-labeled proteins structural studies and will be an expert in spin-labelling techniques and the collection and process of electron-spin resonance spectroscopy data. The Research Associate will have experience with chemical labeling technologies, instrument maintenance and development, and data analysis. The ability to evaluate and communicate scientific results through the writing of scientific manuscripts and presentations in scientific meetings is also required. Engage in ongoing academic and intellectual life within relevant scientific programs in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and collaborate with groups members in Prof. Crane's laboratory.

Training (10%) The Associate will collaborate with other researchers both internally and externally. In the lab, the individual will assist the PI in training graduate students on lab equipment and laboratory techniques. In particular, the individual will be responsible for providing advice and assistance when needed, primarily in spin-labelling techniques and the collection and process of electron-spin resonance spectroscopy data.

This is a 12-month benefits eligible full-time (100%FTE) appointment term which is renewable depending on funding and performance.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in chemistry or related fields with experience in ESR spectroscopy, biophysics and protein biochemistry. Background in molecular biology and genetics preferred.

PAY RANGE: $61,008-$91,000
