Henry Ford Health System Contingent Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant – Surgical Cardiac Surgery - (JACKSON, MI) in Jackson, Michigan
Position Summary:
This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening. NPs and PAs with 3+ years’ experience will only be considered. New graduates will not be considered.
Advanced Practice Professional will provide health care and specialized health services to patients and families enrolled in Cardiac Surgery. The APP will coordinate care of this patient population in collaboration with all members of the health care team. This position will be 100% inpatient.
Ideal candidates will have experience in surgical assist in the cardiac OR, vein harvesting. Valve Replacements.

Independently evaluates patients in the hospital
Ordering/interpreting testing and lab results, modifying plan of care to address results
Provide clinical expertise and direction to support patient medication management
Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments to physicians, streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including communicating specific patient needs to internal and external team members
Perform other related duties as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction
Participate in the development and presentation of educational experiences for patients, families, and health care professionals
Procedures– surgical assist in the OR for cardiac surgery
Schedule– contingent coverage for various shifts. Call shifts, 10-hour, OR shifts
Weekend requirement– Yes, depending on shift covering for
Call requirement– Yes; contingent position will cover for open shift (i.e., Inpatient only or IP w/ call shift depending on need)
OR Time– 4-5 days/week
Duties & Responsibilities:
In collaboration with physician(s), APP will provide independent acute and/or routine medical care to a patients and families enrolled in Cardiac Surgery
Writes appropriate orders, if/when applicable
Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods
Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic
Writes progress notes in EMR indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed
Provides health education to patients, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshop
May perform clinical research related to specific operations
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures
Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards
Ability to perform medical examinations using standard medical procedures
Life support as required through privileging
Ability to clearly communicate medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public
Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques issues, and approaches in area of expertise
Ability to communicate therapeutically with patients and families
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Knowledge of OR, pre-op and/or post-op procedures
Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements
Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions
Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records
Knowledge of primary care principles and practices
Conditions of Employment
Employee Health requires all employed providers to complete a health screen per HFHS policy.

Working Conditions:
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training
Minimum Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree and/or master’s degree - Certification/Licensure eligible for Michigan certification as a PA or Minimum Masters in Nursing, Certified NP pending, as documented by temporary certificate
Completed Degrees from an accredited institution and Michigan licensure
Qualifications:
Education/Training
a. NP – Completion of a NP training program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the national League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
b. PA – Completion of a PA training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the PA (ARC-PA)
Certification
a. NP – Certification by a certification body recognized by the State of Michigan
b. PA – Certification by National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA)
Michigan Licensure
DEA/CSL as required through credentialing
EPIC Experience, preferred
BLS / ACLS
