Pay Range: $150000 - $170000 / year

Position Summary

The General Manager will have P/L responsibility for performance of assigned business units and regions. Primary duties will include development and execution of business plans for each operation reflecting Corporate Goals and Objectives, safety, staffing and staff development, marketing and sales for local signal and communications track operations, customer relations and developing new and more efficient operating practices to enhance RailWorks competitive position.

This individual serves as a key member of the management team. The GM will manage and grow revenues, market share and profit by recognizing business trends and taking advantage of market opportunities. The position will ensure that the appropriate infrastructure, systems/processes, and people are in place to achieve business objectives, develop new market opportunities, and meet financial/market targets.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Assumes full responsibility for profit and loss (P/L) for assigned regions

• Oversees the operations to ensure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources; develops, enhances and and/or advises on overall operational improvements

• Will oversee and approve all bids submitted for assigned regions.

• Evaluates the assigned regions performance; reviews activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining objectives

• Maintains excellent relationships with all current and potential customers; actively represents the Company at industry-related events and other external meetings and events

• Expands current operations through development of new business opportunities; identifies and evaluates merger and acquisition opportunities

• Approves operational procedures, policies, and standards for the region

• Directs business planning and policy-making meetings and committees

• Develops, executes, and leads strategic plans to promote revenue, profitability, and growth within the assigned region

• Provides strategic input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the assigned region

• Evaluates the profitability of plans developed by internal functions; ensures that departmental strategies are line with overall business objectives

• Establishes credibility throughout the Company as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges

• Works with other groups and divisions within RailWorks to develop project opportunities where the interaction of businesses can provide competitive advantages

• Develops plans for recruiting, training, developing, and retaining staff to meet current and anticipated needs of operations including appropriate succession plans

• Provides leadership and direction to recruit, retain, and motivate a high-performing staff and management for each assigned region/business unit

• Sets measurable performance standards for each business unit and its component operations

• Directs the development of goals and objectives for appropriate personnel in business unit and operations management, individual development plans for high-potential employees in accordance with RailWorks practices

• Conducts periodic performance reviews of direct reports and oversees same for individuals in business unit operations

• Provides recommendations for changes in compensation and bonuses in accordance with RailWorks programs for Executive approval

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical discipline; MBA preferred

• A minimum of 15 years’ experience in the heavy civil construction industry or a related industry, including a minimum of 10 years senior management experience. Railroad signal and communication construction experience preferred

• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office required

• Previous P/L responsibility for large, multiple projects or a division of a large company, and familiarity with government contracting requirements

• Strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus who has demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution

• Experience in formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures

• Successful track record in business development; ability to creatively identify and pursue current and future business opportunities

• Strong ability to prioritize, multi-task and delegate, and to get heavily involved in execution when it is warranted/required; ability to quickly diagnose operating challenges and drive continuous operational improvement

• Strong command of resource allocation, employees as well as financial resources

• Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures

• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to execute and move decisions forward

• Demonstrated leadership skills; ability to effectively hire, lead and manage staff; experience in general management and HR issues; ability to motivate teams and simultaneously manage several projects

• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

• Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations

• Possess uncompromising integrity.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Works in an office environment but frequently travels locally and nationally; requires 30-40% travel

• Sits for long periods of time

• Frequently speaks, reads, writes, and uses a computer keyboard

• May require standing, walking, lifting, stooping, or bending
