John Pennekamp Coral State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill a Park Services Specialist position, providing visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management. The applicant must possess good visitor service and administrative skills, be able to work independently and have the ability to perform a variety of skilled trade functions using assorted equipment and tools. The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Renowned for being the country’s first undersea park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park encompasses an impressive 70 nautical square miles. While many visitors view the park’s colorful coral reefs and teeming marine life on a glass-bottom boat tour, one can get an even closer look by scuba diving or snorkeling.

Canoeing and kayaking through the park’s waters are popular activities; fishing is permitted in designated areas.

Visitors can also enjoy walking on short trails through tropical hammocks, picnicking or swimming at the beach. The visitor center features several large saltwater aquariums filled with sea creatures, and nature videos are shown in its theater. Full-facility and youth/group campsites are available.

    Pay:

    Base salary $3,003.00 plus $95.33 Competitive Area Differential monthly/$36,036.00 annually

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

    Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply. In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

    MAINTENANCE - Performs and/or oversees the repairs, maintenance and construction of park buildings; to include carpentry, brick, cement, block, plumbing, wiring, roofing, trim, framing, foundations, exterior and interior finish, painting, floors, doors and windows. Performs and/or oversees the maintenance and repairs to electric motors, generators, and compressors. Installs and/or oversees the maintenance and repairs to valves, sinks, wash bowls, sewers and other sanitary fixtures. Performs and/or oversees the maintenance and repairs to air conditioning and heating equipment. Operates all park maintenance equipment, including saws, drills, presses, torches, welders, grinders and all tools. Performs related work as required. Maintains park boats, outboards and trailers. Performs and oversees the maintenance of the dive gear and all related safety equipment.

    ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including, following purchasing guidelines, compose and submit project progress reports, accidents, crisis and miscellaneous incident reports, vehicle, boat and equipment operations, property records, monthly and quarterly safety inspections, and timesheets. Answers telephone, operate radio equipment and maintain logs. Answers correspondence and maintains park files. Ability to follow DEP Directive 300 when purchasing materials and supplies.

    RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Participates in planning and conducting natural resource management activities by implementing resource management techniques required to manage and restore natural communities and marine ecosystems. Performs and assists in the construction and maintenance of the reef and seagrass protection buoy and channel marker system, which includes underwater installations and maintenance. Participates in the Parks exotic plant control program; reports results as required. Assists biologist in the biological assessments for permit requests and boat grounding instances.

    PROTECTION - Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof for the enjoyment of the visitor. Enforces marine area rules pertaining to seagrass and coral resources through public education and buoy/channel marker program. Performs safety inspection of the dive equipment to ensure safety of dive staff.

    Dives as directed.

    Performs related work duties as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

  • the principles and techniques of the skilled building trades

  • the principles and techniques of mechanical repair work

  • safety procedures required in maintenance and repair work

  • tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair work

    Skill in:

  • basic electrical systems

  • basic plumbing repair

  • utilizing tools and equipment in maintenance and repair work

  • maintaining and operating all park vehicles to include: cars, tractors, boats, mowers and electric carts

  • work related diving and installing marine protection buoys and channel markers

    Ability to:

  • lift approximately 50 pounds singly and up to 100 pounds or more with assistance

  • maintain and repair electrical services in park facilities

  • maintain and repair plumbing services in park facilities

  • maintain dive gear and related safety equipment

  • operate underwater tools and equipment

  • perform a variety of skilled trade functions

  • maintain a valid driver license

  • reside on park property

  • maintain and repair air conditioning and heating systems

  • establish and maintain a schedule for the upkeep of park facilities

  • write a scope of work for park facility repairs or upgrades

  • track park inventories and make supply orders

  • participate in the park’s resource management program including the removal of exotic plants

  • perform physical labor in hot and humid South Florida climate with minimal supervision

  • determine work priorities, assign work and follow up with inspections

  • successfully complete and maintain current certifications/trainings in: Open Water SCUBA certification, First Aid, CPR, Emergency Oxygen Administration and Blood Borne Pathogen Training

  • successfully complete ranger academy

  • successfully complete background and fingerprint check

    Other Job Related Requirements for this position:

  • Valid driver license

  • Successful completion of ranger academy

  • Incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, F.S. and DEP directive 422 (Background Investigation), is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check

  • Must be approved to SCUBA Dive in accordance with FDEP Diving Safety Manual, and DEP Underwater Manual. Participate in the DEP Medical Monitoring Program.
