Maritime Administration Sports Specialist (Asst. Sports Information Director) (Excepted Service) in Kings Point, New York

Summary This position is located in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Maritime Administration (MARAD). Responsibilities This position requires that the employee possess the academic credentials and additional criteria necessary for the rank of Sports Specialist (Assistant Sports Information Director) in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, as delineated in the Qualification Standards for Faculty Appointment and Promotion, or approved waiver of such credentials/criteria. In addition, the employee’s background and credentials demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of Assistant Sports Information Director. The Faculty member is expected to carry out his/her duties and responsibilities in a competent manner and maintain high standards of conduct which will reflect favorably upon the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Maritime Administration, the Department of Transportation, and the United States Government. The Faculty member has a personal responsibility for continued professional growth which may be evidenced by such activities as advanced study, publication of results of research, consulting, productive activity in his/her professional area, and overall service to the Academy. He/She is expected to keep abreast of developments in the relevant specialized fields of education. The primary objective must be the resulting enrichment and improvement of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each faculty member, whether in uniform or civilian attire, has an obligation to maintain an acceptable appearance in bearing and dress. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and experienced professional who works to support the Mission of the USMMA. They must be capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules. They must be able to work well within the structure of the sports information/communications team and must be positive contributor. Requirements Conditions of Employment This is an Excepted Service position. You must meet specialized experience to qualify. Required documents must be submitted by the closing date. PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed). TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period. NOTE: This is a Full-Time, Excepted Service appointment with an Initial Term Not-to-Exceed 13 months; however, each year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, the appointment may be extended for an additional year. Qualifications To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience qualifications. To qualify for the Grade 00, you must possess at least 1 full year of experience working within a collegiate sports information department. You must also possess skills in at least three or more of the following areas: Creating graphics and video content for the department and each team for social media and for use on interactive scoreboards. Writing press releases and maintaining the USMMA Athletics website (USMMASports.com). The ability to attend all home athletic events to record statistics on the NCAA-mandated stat programs StatCrew and NCAA LiveStats, serving as the official scorer for a handful of events. Reporting statistical information to the NCAA, opposing Sports Information Directors and our affiliated conferences (primarily the Skyline Conference); manage statistical archives. Nominating our student-athletes and staff members for conference, regional and national awards. Public address experience announcing at numerous home athletic events, among other duties including assisting with game day staff management. Preferred Applicants Should Possess: Master’s Degree in a field related to the duties of the position. At least two or more full years performing sports information duties at the collegiate level. Have strong interpersonal skills Have great skills in PhotoShop, InDesign and Video Editing Have experience managing social media pages/content Have strong writing and editing skills Be willing to work weekday evenings and weekends Understand the basics of StatCrew and/or NCAA LiveStat KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Education and Training Leadership Oral Communications For all types of consideration, experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
