Summary This position is located at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida. Responsibilities The incumbent will have comprehensive responsibilities for overseeing the operation and management of the cemetery. The incumbent works with the Cemetery Director to direct the overall day-today operations of the cemetery, often performing significant periods of duty in an outside environment. Responsibilities include overseeing the interment schedule, preparation and closing of all graves, placement of temporary and permanent markers, and maintenance of all gravesites, roads, grounds, and landscape. The incumbent also supervises the operation and maintenance of all equipment and the minor repair of all structures, equipment, vehicles. Responsible for administrative operations to include verifying complex eligibility issues prior to planning for committal services. The Assistant Cemetery Director is responsible for maintaining all property accounts, time and leave records, records management, and the preparation of recurring and special reports. Personally develops studies and analyses of cemetery operations to determine personnel requirements; to make modification and improvements needed for more effective operation; and to define trends in utilization of burial benefits. The incumbent assists in the oversight of the daily operation of the unit, ensures that agency policies and priorities are being followed; develops performance standards; and evaluates work performance of subordinates. The incumbent assists in directing, leading, and coaching office staff, and develops those supervised for more responsible positions. The incumbent gives advice, counsel, and instructions to employees on both work and administrative matters. The incumbent hears and resolves minor complaints from employees; refers group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager; effects minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands and recommends action in more serious cases. The incumbent interviews candidates for positions in the unit; and makes or approves selections to fill vacant positions at the cemetery. The incumbent recommends appointments, promotions, and reassignments to unit positions; identifies and provides for training needs; and finds ways to improve production or increase the quality of work with the area of authority. The Assistant Cemetery Director is responsible for conducting outreach activities that promote the cemetery and raise Veterans' awareness of VA burial benefits. While the Assistant Cemetery Director will conduct most outreach activity within the South Florida National Cemetery service area, the incumbent is also responsible to inform Veterans about their burial and memorial benefits in venues that may occur throughout the State. The incumbent interacts daily with Veterans groups and their auxiliaries; families; civic groups, government officials; military personnel; and news media to disseminate information on benefits and services. Salary Range: GS-11: $77,274 - $100,453 GS-12: $92,619 - $120,401 Work schedule: Required to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. May include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day and Veteran's Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond the 36 semester hours of graduate education earned.
